Yep, it’s a love fest

I’m supposed to be showering right now (not because anyone told me to, but because, well I have a nose of my own, thank you), but I wanted to grab just a minute to say:

It’s more wonderful than I hoped for. If you think these people all seem smart and funny and clever and nice on their blogs, wait until you ever get to place yourself in a room with 70 or so of them. I am so, so happy right now, and it’s not just because Esme brought cookies or Mary Lee brought chocolate with peanut butter centers or any of that. It’s because people are getting to hang out with friends they’ve never met in person, we’ve all proven we aren’t actually prison inmates who are just posing as librarians or authors (although I still can’t vouch for those who weren’t able to come), and it’s just crazy-wonderful to talk nonstop with so many like-interested people.

It’s time for our cocktail hour soon, then the dinner itself–remember when this started out as JUST a dinner? And a potluck, at that? As my husband said to me when he dropped me off at the airport, “Talk about mission creep.”

Anyway, let me say again that I’m sorry everyone who wanted to couldn’t come this year, but I hope you’ll have it on your minds for next year. Because trust me, this is now A Thing. They don’t call it the First Annual for nothing. Actually, I made up that title, but I’m sticking to it.

Now to wash.

I’m not a prison inmate, either, I swear! Ask Fuse or Liz or MotherReader - they can vouch for me!

Thanks so much for posting the update. I’ve been staring at my empty blog reader and wondering what you guys were up to. I’m glad to hear that it’s definitely a “thing.” I sure hope I can come next year!

  2. Kelley Says:

I’m so jealous! In a nice way, of course. I’m glad it’s more than you even hoped for! Enjoy, everyone. I do hope I can figure out a way to come next year. Different place, same time? Anyway, you’ll have to give us the juicy details later.

  3. Katie Alender Says:

Yeah, but who needs all that when I get to stay here and induce vomiting in my dog for the second time this week?

    I mean, come on. I don’t need a love fest… I have a barf fest.

  4. Dylan Says:

YAY! It’s so great to hear your having a good time!

  5. david e Says:

Yup, this is the life, sitting around at home staring at Bloglines waiting for all of you to update all the fun you’re having so I can feel even worse about not being able to make it this year.

Hey, how many of you are going to be at the Horn Book Awards this coming week? Anyone? You can rub it in my face while you’re there!

    Seriously, sounds like fun. *sigh*

  6. Patrick, the Space Lord Says:

Oh, this is so great! I am here! I have taken over the mind and body of one of the attendees!

Now, the game is on. Who am I? :)

  7. Sarah Miller Says:

*sigh* I’m sitting here like Cinderella, waiting for the fairy godmother to show up and whisk me off to Chicago in a mouse-driven gourd…

Strange. That’s what I’ve been doing since I got home from work this afternoon….

  9. Alkelda Says:

I’m glad everyone is having a great time!

  10. Wizards Wireless Says:

I admit it, I’m here- don’t throw any stones at me or anything! It really is fabulous… Robin did an AMAZING job pulling everything together.

  11. robin Says:

All right, Sheila, I’ll put your name on the “might be vouched for” list. You’re another step closer to being proven real.

Kelley, different place, maybe same time. See the new post I just posted.

Katie, your life ROCKS. You are the envy of so many, including me. I love dog barf. Gimme more.

    Thanks, Dylan!

David, it really does sound pathetic when you put it that way. Maybe if you induce vomiting in your dog you’ll feel better? Try it and get back to us.

Patrick, are you Mother Reader? Or Fuse #8? I give up.

Sorry, Sarah! But maybe you’ll be happy to know that your name came up during the raffle portion of our evening. Miss Rumphius gave away a Mo Willems t-shirt and tote, and explained that part of the journey that led her to that was Fuse posting a picture of you with some Mo t-shirt. Did I get that right? I’m kind of exhausted.

RM1, see above re dog vomit. Sorry, man.

Wizards, thank you! I’m so glad you could come and play with all of us.

Alkelda, you’ll be happy to see my new post! We’re coming close to you!

  12. Sarah Miller Says:

Ha! Yeah, you got it right. I’m famous now! (In a pigeony way, at least.)

  13. Liz in Ink Says:

I mean, I KNEW it would be that good. That’s why it’s killin’ me.
I can understand you questioning our inmate-status, and I think the point is, It should be CRIMINAL not to go!! Right?
So happy to read this update, Robin. Thanks…

  14. Kelly Says:

It was better than good. To really meet all these people was amazing. And, what’s triple amazing is that no one surprised me. Everyone is just like his/her blogs :)

  15. RM1(SS) (ret) Says:

RM1, see above re dog vomit. Sorry, man.

I don’t have a dog. Do guinea pigs vomit?

  16. Little Willow Says:

Everyone: I’m so glad that it was a success. I had no doubt that it would be!

Yay to you all, and thanks galore to Robin.

Sarah: From the R&H musical Cinderella, I love In My Own Little Corner. From Disney’s Cinderella, I dig Jacques & Gus-Gus.

  17. Anne Says:

Yaaay, Robin! I had a great time. I talked myself hoarse. Croak, croak!

This is what happens when you get a bunch of book nerds together … we don’t stop yakking.

And it’s all your fault … er, I mean, it’s all thanks to you. Much obliged.

  18. Jackie Says:

No one can yet vouch for me. I’m still a prison inmate. Colleen Mondor and I once talked on the phone. Does that count? Probably not. Sigh. Next year.

  19. Gregory K. Says:

As you probably know, Robin… the First Annual rocked. A pleasure to meet you (and so many others) and endless thanks for taking the idea and running with it!
