Go, Martina

Did anyone see that piece on Martina Navratilova in last week’s Time? She’s still playing pro-level tennis at age 50. And did you see the photos of her? She’s nothing but meat and muscle–awesome.

But what I love best was a quote from her new book Shape Your Self. She says you can start developing the mentality of an elite athlete by setting high goals, visualizing success, pushing hard, and bouncing back from defeat to achieve.

Isn’t that the definition of what it takes to succeed at anything? You don’t just settle. You picture yourself ten or a hundred steps ahead of where you already are, then you move deliberately toward that until suddenly you are that person. It may be a shock to everyone but you.

One of my favorite authors is Norman Vincent Peale, who said we should take a normal assessment of our capabilities and then raise it by ten percent. Sounds like Martina has always picked a number even higher than that. What’s your number?
