I burn through computers like girlfriends.

By that, I've had 2.

One I built and always had problems, always putting in new parts, upgrading, formating.

One of them I bought completely, but really don't know how it works(I know nothing about MAC), but it's super cool.

Every other has been a loaner from someone else.

Oh, my computer is so anthropomorphized. He's named "Murphy" (after a similarly titanium-coated movie character), and he's been a member of the family for years now; I can't think of a time when I've referred to him (er... it) as "my laptop" -- even the kids call him by name. When he's having trouble, it's always, "Murphy's sick."

Of course, Murphy's also on his last legs (I'm hoping for one more good year out of him), and I decided to look at it as a personality transfer -- "Murphy" will continue to exist in his brand-new body, while his old body will house a new personality (the plan is for MotherReader to take it just for writing and web browsing -- which won't tax it as much as my video editing). After all, what is an individual but the sum total of memory and experience -- which will transfer over to the new physical machine.

Maybe not an altogether bulletproof argument metaphysically, but I'm sticking with it. I couldn't stand to see Murphy go.

Emily, ha! This is why you need to be on the blog more often. Don't be shy--you belong here.

Adrienne, I'm sure I'm going to have a similar thought of "Why didn't I do this sooner?" Any change feels like a hassle, even if you know you're going to be so much happier afterward.

BJ, thanks for that reminder. People really do need to know that.

Heather, of course I wasn't talking about you, but if I were, I'd say I hope you're being nice to yourself above all else!

Speaking of which, Mother Reader, I often have that realization on Thursdays: shoot! I haven't done anything nice for myself this week! What am I going to report tomorrow! So I'm glad you woke up and took a nap. If that makes sense.

I was having similar problems with my old laptop, and, finally, this past January, I got a brand-spanking-new one and quickly realized that I should have done it way sooner. It made my daily life that much easier, which gives you an idea about the amount of computer time I put in on the average day.

It's best to say goodbye to an old computer friend before it starts to become demanding. Like my computer: I have all kinds of important documents on it, and it knows I want them. But before it will let me have these important files, I must first coddle my computer, lie to it and say that it's still fast after all of these years, that it's got all of the power it needs to do a good job. Of course, we both know I'm lying, but if I don't say these things, my computer refuses to give it up. It's a very co-dependent relationship. So, don't be like me. Break up with your old computer, even if you feel guilty!

Oh, I feel for ya! I just went through the computer swap.

I'm glad you found a great way to recycle your equipment. Electronics should NEVER be landfilled, since they leech mercury, cadmium and lead into our water supply. Not to mention the plastic parts made of oil that never degrade (those companies who say they do LIED to us!)

You so funny.

Nice reminder, though, for me to do something nice for myself this week. I'm usually very good at that, but this week has been a killer. Hmm, maybe I'll go take a nap, like right now.
