Thank goodness back fat is back in
Did any of you ever hear Janeane Garofalo’s stand-up routine about back fat? I love Janeane so much I’ve written lead parts for her in two of my novels and one screenplay, so Janeane, if you’re reading this (which I’m pretty sure you are), please contact me and let’s talk.
Anyway.
I have this obsessive need to read the newspaper every day, but sometimes I get too busy and have to read about two weeks’ worth at one sitting. Yesterday was that day. So maybe this is old news to some of you, but it was fresh and exciting to me.
Skinny models are out. Bring on the pudge.
Okay, well not exactly pudge. We’re talking a body mass index above 18. “Normal” weight gives a woman a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9. So I’m guessing there won’t be any 24s on the runway, but at least there won’t be those scary bag-of-bones-and-a-hank-of-hair kind of girls, either. Progress, no?
I’m sure you’re all watching Project Runway, and the most illuminating challenge so far has been that one where the designers had to design for each other’s mothers and sisters. Only one woman would have been considered “normal” size. All the others were the size of our mothers and other regular women.
There’s no doubt it’s harder and not as much fun to design for a woman built like the American version of normal (forget the BMI), but I thought some of those designers–Uli in particular–did a fantastic job. And you could tell her model, Kayne’s mother, felt pretty in the clothes. And that was worth everything.
I tend to prefer the look of women like Xena and Wonder Woman and Meryl Streep in River Wild–you know, someone with some meat on her bones and some actual visible muscle in her arms. That’s at least a body I can shoot for. I don’t want to be so weak and skinny I need help getting onto the escalator.
So who knows? Maybe the Spaniards have started a trend which will almost make up for this bit of lunacy. We can hope.

…When ugly girls had a free ride all the way through. When back fat was all the rage…

Yes, that’s Janeane’s line exactly! Thanks, Lizzie, for always knowing everything.

That episode of PR was sad, showing how designers don’t seem to be trained in making clothes for all sizes(plus,Jeffrey being mean to Angela’s mom…GRRR,ARGGH!).
Speaking of PR,isn’t it a shame that Kayne was kicked off? Poor guy,I’m going to miss him:(

Actually, Lady T, I haven’t watched the tape from last night yet. How sad that Kayne is off! Love that guy’s spirit. Even though some of his designs were over the top, you still have to love his enthusiasm over his creations.
Not to worry, that guy has a big future ahead of him.

lt, so right about runway. in fact that was laura’s obsevation (ie, that most of the group didn’t know how to design anything that couldn’t be draped on a “perfect” model’s body).
i love kayne, not as a designer just the best attitude and spunk–they’ll find someway to bring him back. (he was so cute when he lost–”i’m not a bitch in real life, only on national television”). i just hope we aren’t subjected to any more vincent–ugh!
so who’s your money on?? i’m going with michael. although i love laura’s clothes because i want them (that cocktail dress was adorable), i really think michael has the best eye and most versitilty. on every challenge he is the only one who actually does it full-on, without the ego holding him up, and unlike uli’s (who is also a sweetheart) variations on the same theme. jeffrey, besides his cool neck tatoos, is just the resident bad-boy as far as i’m concerned, even though some of his stuff is very saucy.
having finally finished “24″ i was able to play catchup on pr–it feels good to be back.

Oops, sorry Robin! Didn’t mean to spoil the show for you(I forget that other people have different schedules). I do think Kayne will do well but am still sad to see him go.
Annette,Michael is my pick as well. He’s talented, creative and a really nice guy. Laura is a wonderful seamstress but she’s getting too damn cranky and I adore Uli,who seems to have a gift for blending patterns, but I don’t think she’ll win.
