The Friday list (nice things you did for yourself this week)

Plain and simple: I slept. More specifically, I went to bed early almost every night and got plenty of sleep.

I forgot what that feels like. I forgot why I don’t do that more often, like ALL THE TIME.

So how about you? What sweet things did you do for yourselves this week?

  1. Lady T says:

Well, for my birthday this week,I went to the movies with my sis(Hot Fuzz)and then we joined our mom for some shopping. I picked three great pre-viewed movies at Blockbuster to add to my video library(Little Miss Sunshine,Lady in the Water and The Departed) and then found a couple of good books. One of the books was a total surprise, another collection of Nick Hornby Believer columns,Housekeeping Vs. The Dirt(the first collection is called The Polysyllabic Spree).

The other book is volume one of Tanya Huff’s Blood series, which are the basis of the new Lifetime channel vampire show,Bloodties. All of the Vicki Nelson titles are available in three ommibus paperback editions. Very nice!

We capped off our day together with a meal at Applebee’s. They make a good steak and I adore the garlic mashed potatoes:) That day was nice enough for several weeks,in my opinion. The best part of it was being with my family:)

Lady T, that all sounds wonderful. Way to go, treating yourself like a queen for your birthday.

  3. Vivian says:

I blew off my errands in the beginning of the week to enjoy the beautiful sun and great weather. Got my walking in, jump roped with the kids, blew lots of bubbles and even read outside!

So worth it, now that I’m staring out at all this gloomy rain.

  4. Deborah says:

Happy Birthday Lady T! This week I scarfed down and thoroughly enjoyed a box of baby cheesecakes that a nice person sent me. Didn’t even blink an eye as I watched my waist size grow.

  5. Christen says:

Lady T… Happy Belated Birthday! Do you love Blood Ties? I watch it religiously (and I am NOT a tv watcher). I just finished Blood Price last week. It was a fun read!

Robin, I also slept this week. It was beautiful! Oh, and I also started learning how to knit! I’m really enjoying it. =)

  6. Patrick says:

    I did nothing this week.

  7. bj says:

Well, I didn’t PLAN on taking an extra day off this week, and just absolutely vegging with a great thriller (Jeffery Deaver, The Stone Monkey) but when the DSL went out around noon yesterday, and still wasn’t back on until around noon today . . .

It was great to just say, “To HELL with it!” and give in to inertia, instead of what I’d usually do, which is pack up and move the Portable Office to Panera or someplace equally awful but wifi’d where they wouldn’t get upset at me plugging in and working for a few hours for the price of a cup of coffee and a snack or two.

I feel refreshed. I needed that.

  8. robin says:

Patrick, do you mean you were nice to yourself by doing nothing? Or that you did nothing nice for yourself?

Good job on the sleep and the knitting, Christen!

Deborah, good attitude on that. You should enjoy an indulgence every now and then.

Vivian, love your kid events–as in you getting to play like a kid.

BJ, I’m all for feeling refreshed–especially in the midst of too much to do. I need that right now!

  9. Patrick says:

Nothing nice for myself. Slow week. I’ll try again next week.

  10. Jen Robinson says:

I’m in process on my only nice thing for the week. I’m away on a business trip, and I’m staying one extra night to spend the evening with friends. They are hosting a wine tasting party, and I’m going to see other friends who I haven’t spend time with in several years. In fact, I need to go now to help get ready. But you may safely assume that I’ll be drinking excellent wine shortly.

  11. annette says:

i took my staff and partner out for a big mexican food lunch. it was so nice and yummy and we had such a great time, i’ve decided we will do this at least once a month.

  12. Nancy says:

I had to go to Los Angeles early this week for work, and I managed to squeeze in a fabulous steak dinner with an old friend.

And today I took the day off of work and went on a date. A really good first date. And I looked fabulous – HA!

  13. robin says:

Nancy, YEAH!!! Here’s to you looking fab!

Jen, that really is a nice thing to do for yourself–especially tacked on to a business trip. Enjoy yourself!

Annette, you had me at “big mexican food lunch.” A treat any time of the week.

  14. Miri says:

Well, I did at least two half-hours of straight reading early in the day every day this week (circumstances helped out with that quite a bit). Gosh, that’s relaxing.

I also sang in Japanese again. I’m now learning “Melissa” phonetically because I haven’t learned enough Japanese to learn it any other way. (Why Melissa? Because it’s the first opening theme to Fullmetal Alchemist, of course!) For some reason, learning Japanese songs is just really fun, even if I don’t have a good handle on the language itself yet. I’m trying to teach myself (tonight’s theme was Learning Japanese Through Tiresome Cross-Referencing, which was, oddly enough, another nice thing I did for myself. It’s one of those hard-work but SO worth it in the end things…I found the Japanese phrase that would be closest to the spirit of the title of the song “Court of Miracles,” one of the neatest songs in any Disney movie).

Basically, I gave myself permission to be strange this week.

  15. robin says:

“Basically, I gave myself permission to be strange this week.”

    Ha! Miri, you rock.

  16. Patrick says:

Well, if we count being strange… I guess I was supremely nice to myself.

  17. Sara says:

I played golf. In a skirt. Oh yeah, I like to spin, and do yoga, and crank out pushups, and lift weights. But sometimes there is nothing better than a sport you can play well in a skirt.

Yes, Patrick, this IS a dare.

  18. robin says:

    Ooooooo . . .

  19. Patrick says:

Are you challenging me to a round of golf in a skirt?

    Very well, I accept!

Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: Never go against Patrick in a skirt.

    My legs are too fine!

  20. Sara says:

Actually, I was just daring you to SAY something. About whichever sport you thought you could play well in a skirt.

But now I believe an actual picture might be required. Perhaps to go with the Speedo one? And no fair wearing the Speedo UNDER the skirt.

  21. Miri says:

So…now we can go in against Sicilians when death is on the line? Is that what you’re saying?

…or are you secretly Sicilian, and this is really more serious than anyone thought?

    Oh, dear.

Ah, well. Life is pain, Patrick. Anyone who says differently is selling something. So knock ‘em dead.

May I buy my tickets now? I have a feeling this’ll be an interesting round of golf.

  22. robin says:

(Let me just quietly say how hap-hap-happy I am when people quote from The Princess Bride. Please, carry on.)

  23. Lady T says:

Thanks for the belated B-day greetings, folks and yes,Christen,I adore Bloodties! The Tanya Huff book I bought has both Blood Price and Blood Trail in it. Thanks for the feedback:)

  24. annette says:

rb, i’m happy that you remind the uninitiated (apparently on this blog, only me) that all references i don’t get find their genesis in “the princess bride.”

off-topic (on this post, but not entirely). i took my own good advice and with hubby and a bottle of wine watched “the thomas crown affair”, original and remake, back to back–excellent. have to take issue with my fellow-blogger’s comment that the remake is superior. not so, it’s good, but way more “fluffy” than the original which is much darker, more nuanced and best, no happy, sappy hollywood ending.

    annette has spoken.

  25. I followed up last week’s quasimergency trip to the dentist with a return engagement for oral surgery and fillings.

  26. robin says:

Oh, Little Willow, I’m so sorry! What a harsh April you’re having! But hang in there–just two more days.

  27. jules says:

As usual, I’m late to the list, but I’m here!

    Congrats on the sleep, Robin!

This week I got to go out with a huge stack of books and read alone over coffee while my mom watched the girls.

And I’ve started a regular exercise routine of sorts. It’s hard with wee ones, but I found something that works, involving good swing music to get your heart rate up. All my life, I’ve never had to worry about my weight, but now that I’ve had two children, I can see how my metabolism is slowing and that it could become problematic if I don’t start exercising regularly. So, that’s being VERY good to myself (esp. since exercise makes you feel great in more ways than one). Woo hoo!

  28. jules says:

Oh and Little Willow, I will celebrate the end of April with you. I know you’re ready to see it GO AWAY!

  29. robin says:

Jules, finding time to exercise in your busy situation is HUGE. Congratulations! And you’re right–letting your body move around really does improve so much more about your life. Who wants to feel all slow and sluggish and creaky before it’s absolutely necessary?

  30. Thanks, Robin and Jules!

Swing music ROCKS. I love the authentic folks and original recordings, especially Glenn Miller. I also like contemporary swing along the lines of The Brian Setzer Orchestra.
