The Friday List (nice things you’ve done for yourself this week)
First of all, I really thought that one nice thing I was doing for myself this week was not blogging. Wrong! It hurts! I miss you! Aaarrgg! But maybe I’m just trying to avoid my work. Maybe I’m looking for distractions. But can’t I just come out and play a little? I mean, not every day, but maybe sometimes? Please?
And then there’s Patrick in my face, and you know I can’t abide that, and so I have to make it at least past December 3rd, right? This is one of those times when that little sister gene in me is so dominant. Can’t let him win . . . can’t let him win . . . (And no, Patrick is not my big brother, but he sure knows how to push all those buttons.)
But on to other things. The really super nice thing I did for myself this week was give up my native frugality and finally buy myself a new desk chair. I’ve been using the same fabric conference chair–permanently borrowed from my husband’s office (and therefore free)–for the last twelve years. And for the past year or so, it’s been squeaking and complaining and generally acting like it was going to collapse at any minute.
So I saw that there was a sale this week at Office Max, and I went in for the $40 chair and walked out with the $129 one. Score! Because I sat in every one of them, and only the $129 chair felt good on all my relevant parts. And I figure I’ll use this one for another twelve years, so if you amortize that out, it’s only $10.75 per year. I’m worth that, aren’t I? It’s amazing how hard it is for me to spend money on myself like that. But I have a duty here on Fridays, and I need to set a good example. So all y’all, go buy yourself a comfortable chair. You, too, are worth it.
I’ve done other things this week besides buy a chair, but since I haven’t been able to blog about them, it’s like they didn’t really happen. Sigh. Oh, well. Work, work, work, little writer. At least until Patrick’s bet date passes.
And you guys? What nice things have you been doing for yourselves this week?

Amortizing chairs… I love it!
I let myself go out last night and have fun. I went to a fashion show at a mall and met TIM GUNN! I also let my friend talk me into buying some fabulous new clothes that I normally would not spend on myself, but you had to make a purchase to get a book signed by Tim.
He is the nicest guy. And apparently an author now! We had a blast.

$129? I’m always lusting after the $2000 chairs. I never thought of amortizing them. My tush may thank you sometime soon, Robin.
I went to Whole Foods and bought a strange cheese. Yes, that’s fun for me. I also found natural gourmet red licorice. Twizzlers, be gone!

My husband bought me a new chair last week and I love it. Much nicer than the one that was hurting my legs.
Today is my last day to act like I can eat like I have the metabolism of a teenager. So I treated myself to a soy latte and pastry this morning. I’m not going to be WW strict as in the past, (because it is difficult when you are a vegetarian/vegan) but I do need to hop back on the portion control train because my jeans are snug.

Heather, you and I are having the same experience right now (not just chairs, but jeans). I’ve been so tempted to get radical and strict and bizarre with my eating habits, just to get rid of the pudge, but I know that never works long term. But still, it’s hard to resist dieting! I just have to remember that every time I diet I end up obsessing about food WAY too much, whereas if I just go about my business and stop shoveling it in with both fists, things will unpudge in due time. Anyway, I feel for you. Good luck with whatever course you take!
Sara, “Strange Cheese”–I’m sensing the title of your next book. Or mabybe “Twizzlers, Be Gone!” Either will work. Love your shopping/eating habits!
Michelle, that’s so cool that you met the Gunn! I’m glad to hear he’s as nice as he seems on TV. You always hate to find out someone is really a jerk. And extra credit good job on buying yourself some new clothes! Whoo-hoo!!

I stayed out till 10:30 p.m. on a school night watching a fashion show and meeting Tim Gunn and getting a picture taken with him and shopping and getting to dress Michelle in new clothes and eating at a tasty vegan restaurant and just being a girl! IT ROCKED!

Yay, Shai! Girl Time is really the best, isn’t it? It’s so easy to stay in our routines, hanging with the husbands, etc., but sometimes just getting away with our female friends is more restorative than jamoca almond fudge.

Mheir and I started watching Christmas movies this week - we have a fairly large collection, and find that they help to get us into the holiday mood.
Oh, and yesterday, in the middle of a relatively stressful work day, I slipped out to pick up pizza from my favorite pizza place. And now I have leftovers for today and probably tomorrow. So, I’m kind of amortizing the time that I spent to drive 15 minutes each way. You know how that works.

I had Starbucks all week yet still haven’t figured out how to order correctly.

I went out for lunch yesterday AND today. I had a can of soup at work I could have eaten instead, but canned soup is so depressing. Yesterday I got an eggplant parmigiana sandwich and today I got a salad with extra-yummy things like walnuts and apples and cranberries.
Patrick, You must resist the Starbucks pressure to use those ridiculous names they have for their drink sizes. Acknowledging their lingo only encourages them.

My 3-year-old daughter and I got pampered by my beautician on Friday. It was Samantha’s first professional haircut, and she was great! I always enjoy having Nicki wash my hair. It’s like a mini massage. And now the gray strands are gone and the bounce is back!

Sorry, I’m late but the nice thing for myself last week was to NOT go to the Girl Scout dinner I was dreading. It was to welcome the new leaders, I as the troop organizer for my school, I was supposed to go. But I had no desire to go and needed the time home more, so I skipped with pleasure.
I’ve also been napping like nobody’s business. So I’m either burned out or coming down with something. But, boy, do the naps feel good.
(Robin, I never feel better when I don’t blog. I think that I will appreciate all the time that I’m not online, but I end up spinning my wheels instead. It’s dreadfully unfair. But I find, at least writing wise, I get more charged up writing and reading on line - it gives me that energy.)

Jen, you bet you get to amortize that pizza. And how great to be watching all the Christmas movies together–like it’s a date!
Patrick, people like you just hold up the line for people like us. Step aside until you’ve studied the booklet. Or just order a small coffee and they’ll translate that for you. Be strong.
Dylan, I assume you mean the book you’re writing. Fabulous! Keep going to the end!
Adrienne, I totally support you having something delicious instead of something sucky like canned soup. You’re right–that would be too depressing. We deserve fresh food. Rawk it.
Oh, Kelley, how cute! I bet that was so much fun for both of you. Those Mommy-and-me dates are so precious for all concerned.
Mother Reader, BRAVO on skipping the dinner. Major bravo on that one. Talk about feeling obligated. Way to go your own way! And high five on the naps. Winter brings those on, and we’re fools to deprive ourselves of whatever ones we can grab.
And thanks for what you said about blogging. You nailed it.
