The Friday List (nice things you’ve done for yourself this week)

Happy First Friday of a fresh new year!

I’m just writing my book here, having a really good time with it, and that’s the nicest thing I can be doing for myself right now.

What about you guys? How have you started out the new year? What first-week precedent are you setting for yourself in the self-kindness area? Speak.

I’m doing something active every day…aerobics twice a week, and yoga on the off days. So far, so good, and I can feel the difference. Book is on hold for a couple more weeks until I get through with the conferences I have at the end of the month…speaking at one and running the other one at Cocoa Beach.

  2. Emmaco Says:

I’m doing something nice for myself right now - I stayed home from work as I have a cold. This is very strange for me as I very rarely get sick (I blame these foreign germs!) and so never take time off work. But I figured that there was no point coughing over people and getting hardly anything done anyway. If it was someone else I’d have encouraged them to stay home and recover, so why treat myself any differently?

  3. Heather Harper Says:

I’m gradually easing back into my better eating habits. :)

  4. Shai Says:

I left work at a decent hour to go to the gym with a friend and then spent a little too much on a pair of cute jeans.

The nicest thing I did for myself this week was to not back down. I’ve been dying to tell this story.

In the middle of Dec. the rate for the hotel rooms that I wanted for my Girl Scouts went up $100 a room overnight. When I talked to the manager about this, she would only meet me part way -which put us $200 over budget. I booked rooms at the pre-rate hike price for a different, and less convienent weekend. I felt awful about it for a while and watched that weekend’s room rate go up to the same as the first.

Then it hit me. If I was to trade dates, what would it really matter to them since they end up with rooms that they could charge the higher rate for. I knew it would take some convincing on my part. And I did mention the possibility of writing an article on the topic. But I got them to give me the date I wanted in April for the original cheaper price I booked for the May date because for the love of Pete, it’s Girl Scouts!

Sorry if that was ridiculously confusing and long, but the point is that I was ready to give up and feel bad, and the nice thing I did for me was to be strong, but polite, and talk and talk until I made it go my way. The End.

It’s Friday? Been a very long weekend for me…

  7. Jen Robinson Says:

I have been taking it very easy all week, as I attempt to recover from the cold that would not go away. Hopefully this is not a precedent that I’m setting for the whole year, because I really need to get back to writing book reviews.

  8. Katie Sis Says:

Spent Christmas money on books. I’m nearly finished with Lady Friday. I’ve spent the last two days doing librarian type stuff for the head librarian at Roosevelt Institute for Rehabilitation. I’m helping him with a project he’s doing on Polio and it’s history in Warm Springs. I’m enjoying that. I spent New Year’s Eve at my church’s Progressive Supper and enjoyed both the company and the food. Here’s to a good 2008!

  9. Dylan Says:

welll I kinished a great book to report on tusday! *dances about* and I got the next 2 in the series bc I can’t put it down! I also did my last day of handwashing dishes bc we are getting a dishwasher! *freaks out* Glad at least one of us is makeing writing progress! XD

  10. Sara Says:

I let my daughter and her boyfriend cook the entire New Year’s Eve dinner for us and two other families. They had a blast, and it was the most relaxed party I’ve ever hosted. They even made double chocolate souffles to serve at midnight with the champagne.

  11. Kelley Says:

Everyone’s been so stinking sweet to themselves!! I’m still enjoying too much chocolate, as I stupidly raided the after-Christmas candy sales. But oh well. It will go away eventually, and I’ll have to stop eating it.

Nice? I’ve been working like a madwoman after my kids go to bed, but last night I got to format a huge book, which doesn’t require much thought. To entertain myself, I put in season 3 of The Office and laughed my head off, even while wincing. (: Such a fabulous show with terrific, deadpan acting.

I also spent gift card money on books. Got them today and look forward to inching my way into them: The Book Thief; On Writing; Hoot; Eat, Pray, Love; Inkspell. I’ve already read Inkspell, but liked it enough to add it to my collection. I’m ready to read!!! Oh, time, give me a break. Please?

  12. adrienne Says:

Tonight, my BFF and I ditched her family and went out to dinner, just the two of us–you know, so we could have a decent conversation. As a bonus, we went and bought some calendars on clearance (best find: an Edward Gorey calendar that tells a story over twelve months).

  13. Little Willow Says:

I ate some jelly beans. (Gelatin-free? WOO!)

  14. Lady-S Says:

I got a beautiful all-healthy candle (scented only with essential oils, no paraffin wax, lead-free wick - you could just about eat it) and a really cute mini set of the Moleskine notebooks. My younger daughter and I are going to be each other’s stress-busting partners and encourage each other to be consistent about this attempt!

Uh, yesterday, got too busy doing nice things for other people to start, but today - oh, yes!

  15. robin Says:

Ah, how I love reading all of these. Sorry I’ve been so absent, but I’m in that last eight-day push to finish this novel and get it out the door to my agent. I’m not ignoring you–in fact, your comments are such a happy distraction–but I just need to be disciplined here and do my Tim Gunn and “make it happen.”

Judy, Heather, Shai, good work on the post-holidays body maintenance. Some exercise, some food adjustments, and your little cells will be back to humming in no time. I’m enjoying coming out of the sugar fog myself.

Jen and Emmaco, so sorry you’ve been sick! That’s not the way you wanted to go into the new year, I’m sure. But how excellent that you’re taking the time to get better, instead of pushing yourselves to the limit and letting the whole thing linger too long. That kind of attention to yourselves probably is how you wanted to go into the new year. Your bodies just forced it on you.

Mother Reader, APPLAUSE. I’m so chicken about asking for things like that, so I’m extra impressed by what you did! And it turned out great! Thanks for the inspiration–I need to try that more often myself.

Patrick, bad week, or just busy week? Hope it’s the second and not the first–we don’t need our Space Lord to have any troubles, thank you.

Katie Sis, Dylan, and Kelley, excellent way to start the new year off right–books, books, and more books. Hope you’ll be fully participating in the Tuesday Book Club this year! Yay!

Sara, Adrienne, Little Willow, and Lady S, excellent pampering examples for the week. Good food, good times with friends and children–setting the right tone for 2008, I’d say. Bravo!

Okay, now back to working on that scene in the car . . .

  16. Little Willow Says:

MotherReader: WOO HOO! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

  17. Patrick Says:

Vacation week. No idea of any sense of time. My holiday is just finally ending.

  18. Dylan Says:

    Oh I will! ^^ ;)

  19. Alkelda the Gleeful Says:

Hi all! I’m late with the nice things I’ve done for myself. Exercise is one. Working on barre chords is another. But really, the nice thing I’m doing for myself is giving myself long-term projects I can work on in small increments.

  20. daflufster Says:

i havn’t been doing much.. i ummm… oh! i painted my nails, and i usually never paint them so that is the nice thing i’ve done for myself!

  21. Suzanne Says:

    hot bath — 2
    chocolates — lost count
new fleece in soft pink — 1

    I like this project.
