The Friday List (nice things you’ve done for yourself this week)

Oh, happy happy. Today I’m doing something so nice for myself.

Remember how last fall I had that loaner Lab? She’s my stepson’s dog, and in the few months we had her she totally stole my heart and ended up sleeping next to me every night, stretched out beside me where I could curl up next to her. And Bear was so in love with her he went into this deep dark depression after she left. We’ve definitely been missing her.

Well, word is she’s not prospering as much in the snow country where she’s living right now–not only is she cooped up all day, but apparently some of the neighborhood bully dogs went after her and now Kaya has a big scar on her face–so I got the call, and today I’m driving seven hours to go pick her up. I’ll be taking Bear with me so he can enjoy the reunion right away. Oh, and I’ll be picking up my husband, too, who’s been away with his son all week doing yurt-to-yurt cross country skiing in the backcountry. Yeah, I know. It’s so normal to say, “My husband sleeps in a yurt.” As normal as explaining to people why he deliberately swims with sharks. Some of us like to do things like that, some of us (moi) just like to read about it.

Anyway, I’ll be on the road all day, my first big driving trip alone, so it’s one of those “pull on your big girl panties” kinds of things for me. That’s good. I need some big girl experiences.

How about you guys? What fun/niceness have you been giving yourselves this week?

Rock on with the road trip, Robin!

I bought some sponge candy from a place that makes really, really good sponge candy the other day. Yummmmmm. (Then I went to spinning class last night to work it off.)

I also took flowers to a friend in a nursing home who turned 87 on Wednesday. It was a treat for me on a lot levels: my friend was really feeling good that day so we had a great talk, spending some time at the florist’s on a snowy day was a treat, and I wound up getting a little pot of mini-daffodils that reminded me that spring isn’t so far off. It was a hopeful day.

  2. Kelley says:

Have a wonderful trip to rescue that precious animal, Robin (the dog, not your husband–though I hope your reunion with him is as nice as Bear’s is with Kaya).

My nice thing was holding to my Valentine’s promise to my husband and devoting an evening to being together–no work, no email, no surfing the net. Just togetherness. And, of course, we watched Lost. Even though he isn’t a huge fan (he says it’s too cumbersome). But for me, he watched, and it’s a good thing because he grasps the time travel stuff much easier than I do.

  3. Sara says:

Oh, Robin, that’s such great news. I mean, I’m sorry that Kaya had to get scarred up, but now Bear will have a friend, and so will you. What a happy ending.

My nice thing is that I’m reading The Secret Garden for the brand-new DC KidLit book club, with its first meeting this Sunday! I can’t believe that I finally get to be part of a live book club that reads ONLY children’s and YA books, and it’s all organized by someone (Susan at Wizards Wireless) who is so together and professional that all I have to do is read the book and show up, eager to discuss. Woo-hoo!

  4. By big girl panties, do you mean “depends”?

I’d recommend using rest stops instead. There was an astronaut who went that depends route. I don’t advise it.

My good thing this week is that my wife was offered a paying job for the next school year. I think other things happened that were good, too, but for the moment, I can’t imagine what the people on the roof of the hotel are doing.

  5. robin says:

Thanks for your well-wishes for my trip. I need to hop in the shower and go!

But first, congratulations, Patrick, on your wife’s job! As you learned from John Scalzi’s post, it’s good for writers to have spouses who make money. I’m sure that’s why you guys did that, since I know how much you loved Scalzi’s post. (cough)

Sara, how lovely that will be! It’s like the love fest that was the Kidlit Conference, but on a monthly? weekly? basis. How nice of Susan to organize that.

Kelley, I love that. It must be so hard to tend to the romance when you have little kids. How great that you two are setting aside the time to be together–and to watch Lost no less! Very sweet.

Adrienne, what a kind soul you are. I’m sure your friend loved that bit of brightness every bit as much as you did. How nice of you to take the time to do that for yourself and for your friend.

Okay, talk to you later. Gotta go!

  6. Jen Robinson says:

Have a safe trip, Robin. I’m glad that, however it happened, things are working out for you to have Kaya back in your day to day life. And Sara, I do wish I was close enough to be part of that book club.

My nice thing this week is that we have just made plans to move to a bigger house, with more room for guests, and a view. Plus it’s closer to Mheir’s work. The move itself won’t be much fun, and my reading and blogging will likely suffer during March, but I’m certain that we’ll be happier in the end. Life is short, and all of that. I’ve already started cleaning things out here. It’s hard on my back, but therapeutic overall. Wish me luck!

  7. Katie Sis says:

I’m chaperoning a youth trip to March Mission Madness this weekend. That may not sound nice to some of you, but this will be about the 5th year I’ve done it and I always enjoy it. It’s going to be in Macon so I will be near my nieces even if I don’t get to see them.

  8. Shai says:

AHH! Congrats on the new addition! Puppy rescuing is the best! Good karma your way!
This week went by so fast! I went to bed early a lot this week and tonight I am partying it up with the book group!

  9. I also discovered today that PHL has a ‘spa’ right at the beginning of concourse C.

    20 minute chair massage!!!!

The job thing is humorous if she was doing it for money. :) I’m happy she’s doing something that she enjoys. His point was silly. ANY job is easier to do if you don’t care how much you make. You TOO can make a GREAT living as a B&N cashier if you have a wealthy spouse providing you health coverage and retirement planning and such.

You could say Melissa becoming a teacher was made possible by her being married to a spouse with income and benefits.. It’s a rather silly point – if one is trying to ‘make a living’ at the thing one is attempting to do.

  10. Carli says:

I hope that you come back alive. Of course you would

Well the nice thing i did today was basically not talk on the bus ride home. I know a weird nice thing but i always talk, a lot. My bus driver has even threatened to drop me off at kids world. But today for some reason i just wasn’t in a talky mood. So i sat in the front of the bus and watched the scenery.

Also i haven’t got mad at my sister all day. That is a real acomplishment for me.

  11. Dylan says:

That’s way cool Robin! Other then finishing pride and prejudice… I went to hangout with friends, got my new sweep books (!), and…. I’ve been styling my hair so it looks cool, plus I called up a radio station even though I was petrifide! XD seeriously soooo sooo scared my heart was beating so fast and I even couldn’t talk the first few times…. :P BUT! on the third try where it actually went through I got on and talked! it was soooo cool! hehehe

  12. robin says:

Whoa, Carli, I gotta say, you’re kind of living on the edge there. Sounds like a good strategy to keep your bus driver from booting you off at Kids’ World. And not getting mad at your sister all day is a big accomplishment–keep it up!

Jen, congratulations on the house! Yeah, moving will not be the most fun part of that, but the having-moved will no doubt be glorious. Good luck with all the packing and cleaning–I feel for you!

Katie Sis, how nice of you to be a chaperone–I’m sure you’re lots of fun for the kids. And I’m glad you consider that a nice thing for you, too–it would be easy to say yes to something like that, but not actually have a good time yourself. Have fun!

Shai, I hope you had a better week! Have fun at your party!

Dylan, bold move! That shows some spine, girl! Keep it up!

Patrick, glad to hear you’re indulging in chair massages. I don’t know how you frequent fliers get along without luxuries like that. Your poor bodies. As for Melissa’s job and all that, I’m glad she gets to do what she likes. Hope you are, too. (For example, working on your novel, ahem.)

  13. Carli – You weren’t on this bus were you?

    http://www.kpho.com/news/15378361/detail.html

BTW – I got mad at your sister two times today. Sorry.

  14. I have not yet made the big road trip by myself. It’s not something I have any desire to do, unless I’m taking trains, busses and planes. I tip my hat to you, Robin.

I lined the garden with decorative (and practical) bricks this afternoon, and spent a few hours prepping the dirt in anticipation of March 25, which is allegedly the time it’ll be safe to put seeds directly into the ground. I’ve done so much garden work this past week, and it’s been great for my mood. I think I might have to figure out a way to have a greenhouse in the winter.

Be safe! Let us know how your trip goes.

  15. robin says:

Patrick, that news item–OMG. It just got worse and worse.

Alkelda, spring must be coming if you’re already in the planting mood! What a lovely picture you paint. I don’t garden at all, and I admire those of you who do.

Time to turn around and head back home. The dogs are SO happy to be together again! And I’m pretty happy to be with my husband again, too. Last night we stayed in a hotel room that was no bigger than the yurts he’d been sleeping in. Two people, two dogs–too much. Looking forward to the wide open spaces of a normal house. Ta ta for now.

  16. Dylan says:

heheh thanks I will try! ^_^…. e_e XD

  17. Enjoy the puppy reunion. Have a safe trip.

Hmmm. I’ve been pretty much doing things for other people this week, but those things have been enjoyable (like new sites and book discussions) and those people have been cool.

One of the most random things I did this week: I introduced two people from two different generations to the Yip Yips. Thank you, YouTube!

  18. MotherReader says:

I was out at the mall the other day and bought the cutest little slippers at Bath and Body Works. They appealed to the child in me who needed some comfort this week. And you know, I bought those slippers specifically thinking about these Friday posts.

  19. robin says:

Thanks, Little Willow! The puppy reunion was the sweetest thing ever–totally worth the drive. Glad to hear you’re having fun with your work–always a plus. And by the way, I looked up the Yip Yips because I had no idea what you were talking about, and there was a slice of my childhood! Thank you!

Mother Reader, I’m really glad to hear that you have this list in mind. That’s what I want it to do for people. Good for you buying those slippers! So cute!
