Writing, reading, and other vital matters

“When in doubt, go higher”

That’s the motto of an outdoors magazine called Mountain Gazette, and I actually think those words often.

Like right now. Mental and physical state? Burnt, people, just plain burned out. Not another creative thought in my brain. Plus here in my hometown it’s still about eight degrees hotter than hell, so tomorrow I’m taking the husband and the dogs and we’re heading for higher ground. I heard that the mountains where we’re going have highs in the 60s, lows in the 30s. BLISS. It’s even supposed to snow above 10,000 feet, which seems inconceivable to me right now sitting here in my sweltering office with the floor fan blowing on my legs. I keep promising them that soon they’ll have to wear fleece, we’ll be so cold. My legs don’t believe me.

As usual, I’m sure there will be some unusual situations, but bring it. I’m looking forward to some days of only thinking about how far we’re hiking and what I’m going to eat when I get there. I’ve packed up some Uncle Eddie’s vegan peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies (talk about your bliss–available at Whole Foods) to eat up on some mountaintop somewhere, and that sounds pretty much like what I’m looking for. Need to replenish. Cookies are always a part of that, wouldn’t you say?

So anyway, hope you’re all enjoying the end of your summer, and maybe where you live the worst of it is over by now and you’re actually seeing some evidence of fall. Maybe?

Are you all enjoying the Olympics as much as I am? Can’t get enough of swimming–that Michael Phelps is such an inspiration. Proof that even if you have some natural advantages like big feet and short legs and a pool-length torso, if you want to excel you still have to work your tail off. No slackers at the top.

Off to finish my packing–fleece! I’ll check in here and there if there’s anything worth reporting. Otherwise, carry on!

Enjoy your vacation. At the moment i sit at home in the heat here and let me tell u the shower i just took felt fabulous compared to the day.
Sorry i’m not into the olympics but my sister is in love with them.

  2. I wish I could bring the mountain temps inside my home. (My electric bills have made me ill this summer.) Regardless, I hope you enjoy your fleecy getaway. :)

And Michael Phelps IS amazing. I’m not a swim fan, but his focus and skill has been awesome to watch.

  3. Have fun on your vacation. It’s still hot here. Maybe it’ll let up soon.

  4. jules says:

Enjoy! Our weather here is sorta of fall-like-esque this week. Woot!

  5. Elizabeth says:

Jealous. Jealous of your cookies, jealous of your hiking, jealous of your fleece. Maybe someday it will snow again. Maybe someday I will pack it in and head for the hills. Maybe someday they will let the librarians out to play. Meanwhile, I’m living vicariously through you.

  6. Shai says:

Yeah for Robin..I am jealous as well! Enjoy! I am back to school..but we are doing a focus on the Olympic games so I have also been glued to the TV. I was cheering last night during the swimming competitions. My husband was laughing at me. I get so excited!

  7. robin says:

    Sorry, Elizabeth. Sorry!

    Jules, enjoy that, lucky!

Katlin, Heather, and Carli, sorry it’s still hot where you are. I empathize, friends. Sorry you can’t escape to the mountains, too!

Shai, I’m with you on the cheering and screaming. Those swimming events are too exciting!

Okay, all, gotta shove off. I’ll check in from hotel rooms here and there!

  8. Patrick says:

Hallowed be the hotel internet which brings us the Brande.

  9. Katie Sis says:

Hi Robin! I’m glad you’re getting a chance to go away and have some fun and relaxation. I could use that kind of vacation myself right now. I hope you enjoy it to the max!
I wanted to let everyone here know that I’ve started my own blog. http://bravegal10.wordpress.com/

Sorry, I don’t know how to hyperlink it. I’ve only written three entries so far, but I’m enjoying it. Hope you all glance at it every once in awhile!

  10. Lady T says:

Good to hear that you’re taking some time off there,Robin-my mom’s been watching the Olympics and we both agree that Phelps is The Man(and he seems to be a real down to earth type of guy, too. Bonus points for that!)

Have you heard about all of Breaking Dawn backlash? Some of the fans have been pretty upset about a few things in the book and have mounted a “return the book” campaign as a form of protest. In my opinion, bringing back a book to the store after you’ve read the whole thing is liking returning a dress after you’ve worn it to a party.

I’m in the midst of New Moon at the moment but have gotten myself a copy of BD and Eclipse(have to read Book 3 to understand Book 4!),so I’ll see what all of this fuss is about.

  11. eisha says:

Robin! Good for you. Have fun, be safe, and tell us all about it when you get home.

  12. Kelley says:

Hmm. My spam word was “season.” Appropriate, eh? Last week here in Georgia, we got a precious reprieve from the humidity and heat…and also some much-needed rain. We certainly have several more weeks of insane temps and air so wet it frizzes my hair the moment I walk out the door, but that reprieve did give us hope that fall, with its leaves and pumpkins and snappy weather, is coming.

Enjoy your trip, Robin! You deserve some cookies and chill air and time to see the vastness of our world, especially since you’ve been so cloistered with your projects.

  13. robin says:

Lady T, I have heard about that backlash, and I have no idea what people are so tweaked about. I’m 2/3 through Breaking Dawn, and I absolutely LOVE IT. I am amazed at Stephenie Meyer’s imagination. I keep staying up way too late to read, and I can’t stop!

Katie Sis, welcome to the blogosphere! Good for you!

Kelley, I remember seeing a picture of your little ones in front of some pumpkins bigger than they are. I’ll bet fall is a favorite for all of you!

Eisha, thanks. And let me just mention how absolutely hilarious your joint blog about the Twilight Saga was. I laughed very hard.

Patrick, bless you, too, my son.

  14. robin says:

P.S. Katie: How do I comment on your blog? It’s making me jump through hoops I don’t wanna.

  15. Kimmy says:

It is so nice to hear people besides myself looking forward to Fall! I cannot wait to get through the Summer heat. It hasn’t been too awful the last week or so, but it is supposed to heat back up this coming week;-(

As for Breaking Dawn…I loved it!

  16. Katie Sis says:

Robin, I don’t know exactly how you can comment on my blog. The only person to have done so is Murray. I got and email saying that I had a comment and I had to approve it. I did that and it appeared on my blog. I’ll have to ask Murray what he did. Kelley’s had some issues trying to comment too. I’ll see if I can figure out what’s going on. I’m still new at this blog thing.

  17. Patrick says:

It’s requiring you to log into wordpress.com(Robin, if you have WP Stats on your admin page, you have a wordpress.com account)

Katie Sis – I’m not sure which setting requires you to be logged in to comment. If you click on ‘settings’ on the right, and then ‘Discussion’ try checking the ‘Comment author must fill out name and e-mail’ box and see if that changes it.

  18. Katie Sis says:

I fiddled with the settings as Patrick suggested. Try seeing if I changed something.

  19. Patrick says:

Sorry, my bad. On the ‘General’ tab ‘Membership’

  20. Kelley says:

Thanks for fixing that, Patrick. Now I can be the older sister I was meant to be, giving Katie unsolicited advice and just generally being bossy.

  21. Patrick says:

This is why I am here on Robin’s blog, to resolve family computer crisises.

  22. Katie Sis says:

Yeah, thanks Patrick. And she wonders why her oldest daughter thinks she’s the boss of the world…
