Comfort food + comfort movie
I think in honor of some of people’s items from yesterday, today needs to be a day of cozying up on the couch, eating something that feels like kindness, and watching a movie that feels the same.
I was thinking of a second viewing of The Devil Wears Prada, but I’m open to suggestions. Maybe today is really a day for The American President or some other romantic flick with great, quotable lines. What we’re going for here is something to cheer the soul on a rainy day. Picture the big black dog curled up next to me on the couch. What am I gonna rent?

It really doesn’t get much better than An American President.
Maybe The Thomas Crowne Affair.
Or give in and watch The Princess Bride

Here’s the weird thing-I can only access your site very early in the morning or very late at night! FIgure that one out! Usually I love when it rains here-watch movies, make muffins, a great excuse to stay home and knit, but today I have my house and garage jammed with stuff for my moving sale and I am wailing about the rain!!! For movies today, I would definitely need to see Napolean Dynamite again, Wayne’s World, Ghostbusters, anything that will make me laugh. Did you see Blades of Glory-I laughed so hard through the whole thing, my kids were threatening to move seats. That’s on my must buy list for rainy days. Enjoy your day!

The Devil Wears Prada is a good relaxing film to just chill out with, but if Bear is snuggling beside you,You’ve Got Mail might do the trick. Plenty of qoutable lines-”You are nothing but a suit!”,romantic and dog friendly:)
Other options to consider:
Muriel’s Wedding: Toni Collette at her best, plus Rachel Griffiths and tons of ABBA-how can you lose?
Bride and Prejudice: A Hollywood/Bollywood take on Jane Austen’s classic P&P. The musical numbers alone are guaranteed to lift your spirits.
Cold Comfort Farm: The title sounds dreary but the movie is anything but. Great Kate Beckinsale period comedy with Rufus Sewell playing a nice bit part. Most qoutable line:”I saw something nasty in the woodshed!”

Have you watched Eddie Izzard’s Dress to Kill yet? I know it’s stand-up, but it will make you feel great like woah.
April 21st, 2007 at 8:53 am
Lizzie, I confess I haven’t watched that yet, despite your recommendation. I’ll see what I can do.
Lady T, I LOVE Cold Comfort Farm! I haven’t thought about that in years. Thanks for the reminder.
Patrick, are we talking about the Pierce Brosnan Thomas Crowne Affair? I never saw the original or that one. It’s really that good?
Deborah, sorry about your problems with my site. What a hassle. But at least the weather is supposed to clear up this afternoon, so good luck with your yard sale!
April 21st, 2007 at 8:53 am
I’m a B movie fanatic, so I don’t think my suggestions would be of any value to you. But I hope you have a lovely, relaxing afternoon on the sofa with Bear.
April 21st, 2007 at 8:59 am
Thanks, Heather, but don’t discount the B movies. Whataya got?
April 21st, 2007 at 10:14 am
Hello! It is perfect weather in Jersey today! But I agree… comfort food + comfort movie = excellent idea! (I have been away at a conference and then I had a surprise 30th b-day party for my other half last night…. I’m exhausted!)
Instead of a comfort movie though, I’ll be watching some comfort UFC fighting tonight on Spike TV with the guys (for some reason I am the only girl I know who enjoys these fights). I can’t wait!!! =)
Heather… I see that you like B Movies. By any chance did you see The Grindhouse?? (Would you classify those two movies as Bs?) I saw it last week and I LOVED it!!!!!!!
April 21st, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Well, my movie recommendations are suspect, but I am talking about the Pierce Brosnan one.
I really like it.
And Notting Hill. I really like that one, too.
April 21st, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Christen,
Nope. But I really want to see it. That and Rob Zombie’s Halloween that will be released this August. I heard there was a trailer for it before Grindhouse.
And Robin, Ginger Snaps is a great horror flick that uses lycanthropy as a metaphor for puberty. I love that one.
April 21st, 2007 at 12:36 pm
And I would definitely classify The Grindhouse as a B movie. (My criteria doesn’t include film budget.)
April 21st, 2007 at 2:50 pm
I’ll second Patrick’s recommendation of the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. One of my favorite movies of all time. That end sequence in the museum is probably the best choreographed scene I’ve ever seen. Really great stuff.
April 21st, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Since you liked Amazing Grace, what about all the A&E DVD’s of Horatio Hornblower? Same hunky star, fabulously romantic stories, great history, and if you think bravery and moral courage are sexy (like I do!) these will slay you… And the best thing is, if you like them, there is DVD after DVD…yum.
I recommend pairing this veiwing with Stoneybrook Farm’s After Dark Chocolate frozen yogurt or a deep, rich glass of pinot noir.
April 21st, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Okay, Sara, you are obviously a pro at this. Thank you so much for the Horatio tip. You mean it’s something I’ll want to watch hour after hour, like A&E’s Pride and Prejudice? Of course nothing could ever match that, but I’m willing to turn myself over to A&E for some romance.
Barry, thanks for the additional word on Thomas Crowne. Okay, okay, I’ll watch it.
Heather and Christen, I can see you were made to be BFFs.
April 21st, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Lol, Robin.
I guess the best “comfort movie” I own is 50 First Dates. Favorite romantic movie ever.
April 21st, 2007 at 5:04 pm
It is perhaps not surprising, given the books that I read, that when I’m in the mood for comfort movie watching I turn to certain teen flicks: She’s All That, Drives Me Crazy, Bring It On, and, in particularly nostalgic moods, The Breakfast Club and other John Hughes movies. But the Princess Bride is always great, too.
April 21st, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Really, Heather? I’ve never seen that. And I think Drew Barrymore is cute as a button, so why haven’t I seen that yet? It goes to the top of my list.
Jen, the only one of those current movies I’ve seen is Bring It On, which I thought was very entertaining. I’ll have to check out the others. (And of course I own The Princess Bride, so I’m always set there.)
April 21st, 2007 at 6:43 pm
okay, the blog drove me to it–i just got back from seeing “blades of glory” with a big ole buttered popcorn and small coke (no ice) (the “comfort food” prompt). if will farrell is not the funniest human being drawing air on this earth, please let me know who is.
deborah i would have totally wanted to see this movie with you (with your kids, just to make sure their humiliation is comlete).
patrick, loved your suggestion re. “the thomas crowne affair” but will go you one better, see the original with faye dunaway and steve mcqueen back-to-back with the remake–heaven!!!
last, so unbelievably excited about rb’s book party. phoenix in august, where else would anyone want to be?
April 21st, 2007 at 6:45 pm
Little Miss Sunshine!!!
April 21st, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Laura, I’ve seen it three times. Loved it.
Annette, so glad for you that you gave yourself the treat of Blades of Glory! An excellent use of two hours of your life.
And thanks for saying you’ll come to my party! Yay!
April 21st, 2007 at 7:44 pm
I also loved Little Miss Sunshine! I forgot to mention Ferris Beuler’s Day Off and, of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Annette, I’m glad you finally saw Blades of Glory, and am SO impressed that you were able to eat popcorn and drink soda through it-I could not eat or drink my snacks because I was laughing so hard I was afraid they would come out my nose-which would have caused my kids to totally disown me.
Robin, I have put your party on the calendar and can’t wait. Maybe we can get a caravan going from here to there-we can watch Blades of Glory on the car trip.
Anybody for a garage sale? Not only did I get rained out of the morning, but right after the rain stopped some neighbor ratted me out to the HOA and I got shut down. Some people have no sense of humor…
April 21st, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Deborah, your neighbor is SCUM!!!
April 22nd, 2007 at 5:21 am
Her neighbor? It’s the HOA. The theory behind them is excellent, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:18 am
Yeah, but her neighbor is the one who ratted her out to the homeowners association. I’m sure Deborah was very dignified about her garage sale. No black velvet paintings of Elvis or anything.
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:19 am
My HOA has a rule that garages may only be opened for 15 minutes at a time.
I just posted my HOA horror story on my blog.
April 22nd, 2007 at 7:21 am
I couldn’t possibly part with my black velvet paintings. 90% of the stuff I had (and still do now!) for sale was all kids toys and stuff-it looks like ToyRUs has opened a branch store in my garage. My HOA is rabid, way too many people with way too much time on their hands.
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Robin,
For comfort movies, I also recommend When Harry Met Sally. (Because The Princess Bride has already been mentioned.)
April 22nd, 2007 at 3:47 pm
The 1972 live-action full-length musical version of ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.
Once everyone in the world has seen it, I may rejoice.
April 22nd, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Little Willow, you are a woman on a mission. I will not stand in your way. I will add Alice to my must-rents, so that you will be that much closer to rejoicing.
Nancy, absolutely. I could see that movie a million more times and still love it and laugh with it.
April 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm
Last year my favorite must see several times after buying the DVD was ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. I loved the innocence of the story with this quirky family. But, this season I am hooked on ‘Black Snake Moan’. I love the music track (play the CD everytime I drive across town) and have seen the movie twice so far. I love the raw, honest emotions in this story and Samuel Jackson is outstanding. I feel everything in this movie, the sweaty, humidity of the south, the bad girl trying to overcome the nightmares of her past…..I could go on and on. Simple stories with no fluff appeal to me so thse turn out to be my comfort movies—-no popcorn necessary—just bring on the story!! It also helped to hear the writer/director at Sundance and see his honest excitement that this movie had been bought and he was soooo excited. I caught his enthusiasm.
April 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 am
Heather, there were several “trailers” that were made for Grindhouse… and I had thought that they were meant to be fake… but the last time I went onto IMDB they had some of the trailers listed as actual upcoming movies! I want to see Machete (I love Danny Trejo!!!) now! =) (And after watching Death Proof I now want to be Zoe Bell!)
Hmmm… my two favorite comfort movies are Victor/ Victoria and Strictly Ballroom! Whenever Steve (the other half) goes out, I eat sushi and watch one of these two movies. I love it!
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Oooh, Strictly Ballroom is wonderful wonderful wonderful. Must go find my copy as soon as I’m back home….
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:09 pm
MJG, I loved Black Snake Moan, too. So unusual, such a cool story, and GREAT acting. Not to mention fantastic music.
Christen and Nancy, I meant to see Strictly Ballroom, but never got around to it. Adding it to my list. Thanks.
