Yeah, well, I’m up here at Sundance, and I already blew it this morning. I had tickets in hand for an 8:30 AM film, but I just had to see if I could get into this great-sounding documentary instead–American Teen, which follows a group of 17-year-olds for most of a year, and reveals the everyday drama that is the modern teen life. I love documentaries like that, and so it was worth standing in line at 7:00 AM to try to get tickets. But by the time we found out we couldn’t get in, our other film had already started, and they don’t let you come in late, so we were hosed.

Which is why I’m sitting here on the laptop instead of watching the first of four movies today. Wah!

But there’s nothing to do but shake it off and relax a little before it’s time for next movie and the two after that–all of which we have tickets for.

But none of this really matters, because seriously, people, what’s up with Heath Ledger dying like that yesterday? How horrible! Especially because it sounds like he accidentally took too many sleeping pills, just because they weren’t working for him the way he wanted them to. So a careless mistake, and we’re robbed of a great actor. That sucks, sucks, sucks. And his poor little two-year-old daughter. Very sad.

In other news, I went to the little bookstore they have here in Park City, UT, and guess what–they had my book! Three copies, although they could only find two. So I signed them because what else would you do? I was pretty thrilled. It was one of those weird moments where I just stood there and kept saying, “You do? You really have it?” Very happy.

That’s it for my Sundance reporting so far. Not a lot of action yet, no celebrity sightings, but I have already downed two big-ass chocolate chip cookies, so we’re well on our way here.

I won’t bother you again until I have something a little more interesting to say. Carry on.

AW that’s stinks it sounds like it would be a good documentary! :( OMG I know! I was practically in tears when I found out and I was sad for the rest of the night! SOOOO awful! and he was sooo young he didn’t deserve to die he was a nice guy! =/ XD so sad and he was a great actor…. *sobs* But that’s great about your book! I bet that was cool! ^^

  2. Patrick Says:

Well, I don’t know about you, but I DEMAND they find the third book!!! That’s your pending royalties they have misplaced….

btw - your book is in most bookstores that I go into. Should I take photos for you? Inventory them and put into a spreadsheet? What would you prefer?

  3. Barry Says:

    Huh? You write BOOKS, too?

Wild. I thought you just wrote this blog. I’ll have to look into this…

  4. Kelley Says:

Your spam word today is mocking me, because we SO didn’t get any snow here in Central GA the other day, despite a “heavy winter weather warning.” Ha, ha! Not.

Just to be at Sundance and have the opportunity to see such great artistry is an honor. That doc sounded amazing. Sorry you missed it, but do keep us posted on the other great things you see. Oh, and keep tabs on the big-ass cookies. Eat at least one for me.

Very tragic about Heath. He was definitely talented and had a promising future. He was one of those who made careful choices with his films and dared to be less than mainstream (like my man, JD). It’s upsetting that people like him get so stressed and maxed out on euphoria that they turn to dangerous substances to help them settle. Sleeping pills are helpful in many instances, but there is always too much of a good thing. Senseless and tragic.

Super cool about your book! And nice of you to sign the copies!

Can you tell I’ve only talked to a 3-year-old today?

  5. Carli Says:

That would be a good documentary. When my sister told me about Heath Ledger’s death the first thing that came to mind was 10 Things I hate about You. My favorite part in that movie was when he sang and now he is never going to sing again. WAHHH :(.
    I’m crying inside right now.

  6. Shai Says:

At least you are having an adventure that you can write about! Are you bringing those cookies back for us to try?
And I KNOW! I am SOOOOOO bummed about Heath Ledger! It is like River Phoenix all over again! His poor daughter. It is sad that we have to loose such amazing people at such a young age.

  7. Katie Sis Says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s really sad about Heath Ledger. He was about my age and it’s scary that prescription drugs can be abused. I’ll be hard for me to watch any of his movies for awhile.
I hope you have tons of fun at the festival! Someone I know is supposed to be out there. I like the sound of those cookies!

  8. robin Says:

This time my security word was “hugs.” Same to all of you.

    Dylan, I know. Very sad.

Patrick, thanks for the offer. Seriously, the book is hardly ever in my own hometown bookstores (is my mother buying up all the copies? Must look into this), so it’s really a treat when I get to see it out here in the world. Makes me believe it’s a real thing.

Barry, not only do I write books AND the blog (I know, we do tend to forget), but I also write screenplays sometimes, and after just a day up here soaking in all these films, you can bet I’ll be writing another one this year. I’d love to be here showing my own movie some day. BIG goal for me.

Hey, Kelley, sorry about your lack of snow, but take it from me, it’s cold and it’s wet, and you might as well not bother washing your hair because you’ll be wearing a fleece hat all day and night anyway. But maybe you’re more fashionable than I am (and more concerned with hygiene). And I didn’t notice anything weird about the way you were talking–in fact, I found it quite soothing.

Carli, I loved that movie, too! He was so young and fresh.

Shai, you’re right–it is like River Phoenix. More stupid waste of great talent. Hate that.

Katie Sis, I forgot to say I’m also living on Chex Mix here. Nothing but the good stuff.

  9. Kelley Says:

Yeah, I’m really not a big fan of snow (only experienced it about 4 times in my 30 years), but my girl wanted it so badly.

Oh, and I meant the sheer volume of the words I was typing, not the words I used. When one talks to a 3-year-old all day, one cannot contain oneself when one finally gets to talk to adults!

  10. Patrick Says:

Kelley - What’s that? What’s that? What does a cow say? Baa? No? Moo! ha ha ha. Want a cookie?

  11. kelley Says:

Oh God! It’s followed me here! Now we know Patrick’s true identity. The world’s smartest 3-year-old. Seriously, Patrick, you sound as if you’ve had many such conversations. Here’s to you, my brother.

  12. Dylan Says:

    :(

  13. Patrick Says:

Wait until you get to five…

    What’s soliciting?
But, but is is soliciting if I had a lemonade stand?
I’m gonna have a lemonade stand when I grow up.
Because I want to get married.
Well, you have to get married to have a baby.
    Why don’t people like soliciting?
It isn’t soliciting if they don’t sell something.
Is it soliciting if they don’t sell anything?
    Why can’t they sell anything?
    Is my lemonade stand soliciting?
    Why don’t people like soliciting?
You’re driving 45 mph and the speed limit is 40.
I’m going to work with three people at my lemonade stand.
Well, first I’ll have to test them to see if they can make lemonade.
    Daddy.
    Daddy.
    Daddy.

    “what?”

Daddy, first I’ll have to test them to see if they can make lemonade.

  14. Kelley Says:

I LOVE IT!!! I had to read that aloud to my husband. Oh, what we have to look forward to. Quite a little thinker you’ve got there.

  15. robin Says:

Patrick, if you ever get tired of answering those questions, have Oliver call me. I’d love to talk to someone like that.

  16. Dylan Says:

AW Patrick your kids sound great! lol I feel your pain! XD
