See Brick

I just got back from seeing Brick. Could I love a movie more? (Well, yes, Lord of the Rings, obviously, but this is a completely different thing.)

What a total treat. Funny, stylish, far more clever than I can imagine writing. Think Maltese Falcon meets Dawson’s Creek. Sort of. That doesn’t even begin to cover it. Love this movie to pieces. If I had known a guy like the one Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays back when I was in high school . . . wow. The boys I knew just weren’t brooding enough. Apparently all they were was depressed.

If Brick is playing anywhere near you, please take yourself to it right away, before it’s replaced by something loud and lame.

Then after you see Brick in the theater, wait a while and rent it. You’ll want to play the whole thing again, this time with subtitles. Some of the dialogue comes too fast and furiously, and you might want to memorize a few phrases. They will make you seem infinitely cooler.

I love it when people are that clever. Thanks for the great time tonight, writer/director Rian Johnson. Please stay home and write some more.

    Agreed. I loved that movie.

    “Have you ever read Tolkien?”

    Joe–
I know! Wasn’t that line hilarious? Plus, back up a scene with the full-size lamp swaying in the van. I’m so jealous of wit like that.
