We’ll treat this like one of Oprah’s Favorite Things episodes. What’s the best Mother’s Day gift you’ve ever given or gotten? Consider this a public service announcement for all of us wondering what to get for our maters this year.
Fire away.

May is tricky, since my mother’s birthday is at the end of the month. We’re planning to give our mom the usual flowers and candy bit(already picked out a card-it’s one of those Hallmark sound ones)and get a bigger gift for her b-day.
I usually get her the latest Mary Higgins Clark novel(MHC always has one out around this time of year) but last year on her birthday,we bought her a candy basket, with treats from the 1950s.
She really liked it and wants one from the 1940s,too,so we’ll get her that. Amazon has them(they’re the middle man for alot of gourmet food companies) and they’re very cute.

My favorite Mother’s Day gift was one I had chosen for myself, brought home to my husband, and said, “Here, this is what I want for Mother’s Day.” Before Mother’s Day, my friends chided me for being so assertive about the matter. After Mother’s Day, they told me, “You were so SMART.”
The gift was a set of Matrioska dolls in the style of the Haida American Indians. Here’s a link to the photo of what they look like (ignore the blog self-promotion, eh):

Lady T, you can get retro candy from Amazon? You may have just changed my life.
Alkelda, those dolls are beautiful!

My youngest daughter didn’t have any money so she detailed my car for me. It was awesome.

Oh, yeah, Readerdiane. Now you’re talking. What a luxury.

I can’t remember if it was Mother’s Day or my birthday, but my daughter took a square of fabric, filled it with various small objects–a screw, a ceramic owl, a flattened penny, a pink foam hair curler, etc.—and tied it with a wide ribbon. What was it? An “Idea Bag” for when I got stuck with my writing!
I can’t tell you how known and valued that gift made me feel.

My mom loves to garden, so my brother and I always buy her like 10 flats to plant =)
Last year I think she got the coolest gift though! We do the Race for the Cure every year (my mom is a breast cancer survivor) and last year my mom and I passed out on the ground together after the race. Well, a woman took our picture, asked us our information, and we ended up on the FRONT PAGE of the Philadelphia Inquirer the next day!!!!!! How cool is that???? My cousin went into Wawa (the greatest store ever), picked up the paper and saw us staring back at her! She said she ran to the cashier and said, “This is my aunt and cousin!!” It was sooooo freaking cool! We actually bought the front cover reprints and now we’re just trying to get them framed.

For me: free time. by myself.
For mom: Always a problem. I haven’t been with her for mother’s day since I was 18 and entered the higher ed path. I’ve always been “in school” for mother’s day and I’ve never been good about remembering to send stuff. She always appreciates, though, cosmetics she thinks are too expensive to buy for herself.

Sara, how sweet! What a nice confirmation that your daughter values your work.
Christen, first of all it’s cool that you and your mom did the Race, but to make it onto the front page? You’re such a celeb.
Kelly, I like the idea of expensive cosmetics. Maybe expand that to expensive lotions and other girly items?
But I especially love the gift of free time. I know Jules could use that, and anyone else with little ones at home.

Sara, that idea bag is GREAT. Your daughter rocks.
Flowers. Plants. Something for outside. Always good for Mother’s Day. Spring is here!

Oh and here’s a great gift idea, what my husband’s getting me: http://shop.farleyscoffeeinc.com/product_info.php?cPath=5&products_id=81. Not to get all political, but it’s for a good cause, a group called Moms Rising who are simply looking for ways for all moms (never mind that “mommy wars” crap that the media makes worse on a daily basis) to work together and convince our not-very-family-friendly government to develop more family-friendly policies (paid maternity leave, paternity leave, higher pay for daycare workers, more flex-time jobs so that more women can both work and see their kids, etc. etc.). And there’s good coffee involved, which is always good.

Jules, I haven’t heard of Moms Rising before. That’s AWESOME. What a great mission.

Sara, that is the coolest gift ever! Your daughter sounds pretty creative, too! =)
May 9th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Oh, yes, she is super creative, the best at making something out of nothing. One time, in elementary school, she got in trouble during the Pokeman card craze for making and selling her own cards: Brainbots. She wrapped them in little tin foil packs and hawked them on the playground.
I’m going to check out that coffee, jules. I love my coffee!

Mother’s Day was never a big deal in my house. I call my mom and grandmas and say ‘hey, thanks for helping me be born, I really appreciate it, love you lots!’ Sometimes I’ll send a card or a plant or something to my grandmas (flowers die quickly, and are therefore uncool).
It’s basically the same for Father’s Day.
They just never seemed to be gift-giving holidays to me.
That said, I did actually do something (small) for my mom this year, but I’m not gonna say what it is cause there’s a good chance she reads the blog. HI MOM!!!
May 9th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
I think saying, “Thanks for helping me be born, I really appreciate it” is a pretty great one. I’ll add that to my phone call.
Hmm, curious what you did for your mom this year . . .

Hi Lizzie’s Mom!

The kids always go with hubby to pick out flowers for me. I don’t know why hubby allows it because inveritably in a couple of days, he starts complaining about how he’s allergic the flowers and he throws them out.
The girls draw awesome pictures for me, which I love to frame and hang up on the walls. One of these days, I’ll post some up on my blog now that I figured out how to load pictures on it.
I’m with Kelly on the time to myself. I crave it. Forget the breakfast in bed, the dinner at a restaurant, any presents…I want a day to myself where I can just do whatever I feel like doing — no phone calls for rescuing — and just be.
I also send my mom the expensive creams she wouldn’t buy for herself. That is the one thing my mom has always cherished for as long as I can remember. So I love finding luscious face and eye creams for my mom. Sephora.com is great for this.
May 9th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Oo, Sephora. I’ve heard they’re great. Nice idea, Vivian.
May 9th, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Also, Vivian and Kelly, let me please remind you that ASKING for a day to yourself as your Mother’s Day present qualifies as something to report on Friday as the nice thing you’ve done for yourself this week.
Just a hint.

Sara, I gotta have my coffee, too. One day we will have coffee together! In the flesh! (not cyber-coffee) . . .
