Fess it up
I’m stealing Annette’s phrase because this post is in her honor because SHE HAS BEEN BAD.
How? She confessed to me that she couldn’t comment on my blog post yesterday about J.K. Rowling because–yes, I know it’s awful, but let’s just face it and move on–she has never read Harry Potter. There’s another certain someone out there who claims to be a writer and a reader who also has not read HP. I will not out this person whose debut novel was recently featured in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and Teen Vogue, among other places, but perhaps he or she will step forward and explain him or herself when he or she is done eating the ritual oatmeal.
But confession being good for the soul and for our mutual amusement, etc., I think maybe we all have some things we need to own up to. So fess it up: what incredibly popular movie, TV show, or book have you not partaken of? And is that on purpose, or have you just been too busy with your quilting circle or political action committee to take the time?
A few of mine:
Books: Anne of Green Gables (sorry!); anything by James Patterson (read one chapter, got too grossed out and scared, couldn’t go back); anything by Mitch Albom (not sure why, just haven’t felt moved yet)
Movies: Reservoir Dogs (keep meaning to); Close Encounters of the Third Kind (why not yet? I have no idea); Dr. Strangelove
TV: 24; any of the original Star Trek spinoffs; American Idol; The Great Race; Dancing with the Stars; and (sorry!) West Wing (never saw a single episode. Just didn’t want to commit)
Can’t say I feel better, but you try it.

Books:
Harry Potter
(I’ve seen some of the movies, but haven’t read the books. Waiting for my kids attention span to expand before I attempt reading HP to them.)
Anything by Jane Austen.
(Please don’t ban me from your site. I read a lot of poetry growing up, but I skipped the classics for Stephen King and Dean Koontz.)
Movies:
Brokeback Mountain.
(But I haven’t seen a real movie in, like, forever…)
T.V.:
Lost.

Dude, you will NOT be able to handle Reservoir Dogs. Don’t even try unless you have the dog on your lap and the hubby near at hand to pry your fingers from the remote when they go into a deadman’s clutch.
As to Harry Potter — I hear he’s a nice kid.

robin, remind not to confide in you about that certain surgical procedure i had in sweden some years back (you know the one that resulted in my name being changed from andre to annette). other than that i have no secrets–except well the thing about the “princess bride”. that’s right, i still haven’t made it to the end! i think the only recourse at this point is a “clockwork orange” intervention, strapping me to a chair with my eyes taped open.

Okay,I confess to not clicking into the following pop culture trends:
Books: The Da Vinci Code(I am going to see the movie on DVD this week),The Kite Runner,The Poisonwood Bible(still intend to read it at some point),any Beverly Cleary titles,Cold Mountain(did see the movie when it was out)and Everything is Illuminated.
Movies:Jaws,Unfaithful,Last Tango in Paris(not sure that I want to either, despite being a Marlon Brando fan),Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,Meet the Parents(or the sequel-Ben Stiller was alot funnier before Something About Mary,IMO) and those Ocean’s 11,12,etc films.
TV: Lost,The X-Files,Charmed(have watched a few episodes mainly due to Julian McMahon, who I adore on Nip/Tuck but the whole show is so damn goofy. Plus, why do these witches only have one power each on their own? A witch should be able to command several magical abilities solo and perhaps have a speciality or two. Also, there seems to be alot of “women good, men bad” stuff under the surface that really repels me. Thought way too much about this)Survivor,Sex and the City and Lois & Clark

You guys, excellent confessions. And we will do this exercise without any judgments or criticisms. For now. (Because I CANNOT believe what some of you haven’t seen or read. Come on!)

Never read Lord of the Rings.
I want Robin to see Reservoir Dogs. Then we can see how many times we can play “Stuck In The Middle With You” before she goes insane.
Ben Stiller was never funny.
Doesn’t Jane Austen do the Martha Stewart thing? Writes cook books and house cleaning tips?

And I refuse to read Mitch Albom cause he’s a moron.

Well, I don’t think anything can possibly be as bad as Robin admitting she hasn’t read Anne of Green Gables. However, how she can take the moral high ground over the Potter thing given the lack of Anne in her background is inexcusable.
I never watched 24 because I didn’t want to get sucked in. But I don’t really watch TV. Just netflix.
Don’t worry if you haevn’t read James Patterson, you probably have read other books the people writing as James Patterson have written. Also, I don’t think ANYONE should apologize for not seeing Ben Stiller movies. I think that’s actually the path of the righteous.
I haven’t read Catcher in the Rye. Or Catch 22. Any of the Catch books, really. Or anything by Virginia Woolf. I haven’t seen Citizen Kane (I try, but I always fall asleep right around the time the snow globe drops). I’ve only read one book by Nora Roberts, and it was an 80s category novel. And only Stephen King’s non fiction and short stories… never a novel. Also, I hate war movies, so I’ve never watched any of the big popular war movies.
And (here’s the big one). I can’t get into Gilmore Girls. I’ve tried, and I feel like I shold, since people are always emailing me and telling me how it’s all like my book and blah blah blah. But it’s not my thing.

Patrick, I heard Mitch Albom doesn’t like you, either.

enough ben stiller bashing already–he is FUNNY, yes he is, he really is. one word “zoolander”–i rest my case.
November 15th, 2006 at 8:33 pm
Agree about Zoolander, but I’m staying out of this.
November 15th, 2006 at 11:00 pm
I will admit that he is a funny writer/producer what have you. He is also a funny villain, as in Dodgeball. He is not funny as a hero. Meet the Parents was abominable. there’s something about mary was, i admit, funny. Mostly when stiller wasn’t in it.
the other people were the funny part of zoolander. Owen wilson brings the funny. *Billy Zane* is funny. Stiller? No.

diana, i respect you opinion but regret to inform you that it forces me to remove you from my short-list of potential daughters-in-law. sorry.
November 16th, 2006 at 12:13 pm
I’ve never read phillip pullman.

Heathen!

I prefer ‘pagan’ or sometimes, ‘Hottentot’
November 16th, 2006 at 5:53 pm
Well, yeah, I think we all prefer Hottentot.
