Tuesday 50-Book Book Club
Anyone who’s finished a book (or more) this week, sound off.
Mine was Floor Sample, a creative memoir, by Julia Cameron.
I’m telling you, having this Tuesday deadline keeps me reading all week long, even when sometimes I feel like slacking. Hope it’s working for you, too.
Okay, your turn. Report in.

I finished The Time Traveler’s Wife at 3AM Sunday night / Monday morning. Wow! I can’t believe how upset that book made me! I was sobbing when I finished. (Did anyone else read it?) So, of course I had to kick through a quick romance to cheer me up! I read (in less than a 24 hour period) Code Name: Princess. LoL! These books are like my comfort food! I think I’ve read 5 books now!

Good job, Christen! I know Barry Lyga is a huge fan of The Time Traveler’s Wife (I think Lady T is, too–right?). It’s on my list, but it will take a while to get to. But every time I hear about it from one of you I think, “Oh, yeah–gotta get that one.” So thanks for reinforcing it.

I’m really curious to know what people thought about The Time Traveler’s Wife because I really liked it… but there were things I didn’t like. I don’t think it’s the book’s fault, though. See, now you have to read this Robin because I *really* want to discuss it, but I don’t want to spoil the ending!!! =)
January 16th, 2007 at 8:59 am
Yes,I do adore The Time Traveler’s Wife and glad to see someone else experience the beauty of it(it is the kind of book that will make you stay up late to finish). Last night,I finished Because She Can(review to come later this week at my blog)while watching the Golden Globes and folding laundry-yep,I can multi-task with the best of them!
January 16th, 2007 at 9:01 am
Everworld Books 6 and 7, by K. A. Applegate. A really fun fantasy series. There are 12 books total and I want to finish up the series in the next few weeks.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:05 am
All right, Christen, maybe I’ll let Time Traveler’s Wife take cuts just so we can talk about it sooner.
Good job on the multi-tasking, Lady T. Looking forward to your review.
Barry, you’ve told me about that series before. When you get to the end, tell us all if we need to add it to the list.

I read The Time Travelers Wife last fall. Most times I chew up text pretty fast but it took 3 weeks to finish TTW. I recommend reading book although I still do not know what to make of it. You have to admire the loyalty between Henry and Clare. The obvious love that binds them though the unique relationship they have. But what did time travel do to enlighten the reader to the value of love, loyalty and perseverance in a relationship?
January 16th, 2007 at 10:02 am
You all can discuss that, just please don’t include any spoilers for the rest of us.
January 16th, 2007 at 10:34 am
Robin, I’m sorry. In reading my question I don’t think anyone can respond without spoiling it for those who have not read the book. So for those who have read the book please do not respond.
Maybe you can start a blog book club where you suggest a book and a month later those who read it can blog their thoughts
January 16th, 2007 at 10:41 am
I don’t want to comment on the book for fear of saying a spoiler. I think you’ll need to post a discussion as soon as you read the book, Robin! (No pressure!)
January 16th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Hmm, Herb. Let me think about that.
Christen, total pressure! I already started a new book, so let me finish that one first.

I read two books this past week which means I’m caught up - I read the first Gossip Girl book because I wanted to know why girls like them and why parents get all worked up about them. I thought the characters were so outlandish that I can’t understand why anyone could get upset. I enjoyed it, but I don’t think I’ll finish out the series or anything.
Anyway, then, at the other end of the teen girl lit spectrum, I read Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature (not the way it’s actually punctuated) and really enjoyed reading about a character who was a decent, intelligent person and not like any of the Gossip Girl characters.
Was Floor Sample good? I’m a memoir FREAK.

OMG! I just got my syllabus for my Materials for Young Adults class this semester! We’re going to be reading about 30 (YA) books in like 15 weeks! The first book we’re reading is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I wish I could post this syllabus somewhere so you all could give me input. Most weeks it is one required reading and then I can chose a second book from a choice of three. I haven’t read most of these books, so I’d be curious to hear your opinions.
January 16th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Christen, e-mail me the list and I’ll post it this week so other people can comment on their faves.
Molly, I’m glad you liked my book! Thanks for reading. As for Floor Sample, ummm. I’m a HUGE fan of all Julia’s creativity books, like The Artist’s Way, but I think maybe I didn’t need to know so much about her personal life. Know what I mean?
January 16th, 2007 at 11:49 am
[Note: Just got a super-secret e-mail from someone saying, "Hey, I thought your book isn't coming out until August. What gives?"
It does come out in August, but Molly is a librarian, and a lot of librarians have already gotten advance copies from the publisher. Because I think we can all agree that librarians deserve lots of free stuff.]
January 16th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
I agree! Librarians should get free stuff!
Speaking of free stuff… do any of you bloggers ever get free stuff? I wrote a little blog about bookprice.com and then they sent me a free book (The Time Traveler’s Wife) for talking about them. Hahaha… and I got a free pole dancing lesson from my dance studio because I gave a link to their website when I talked about wanting to learn how to pole dance. I thought this was kind of cool =)
P.S. Robin, I sent you the MONSTER list!
January 16th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I am done with 3 books this week including the new Stephanie Plum, short & amusing. Who can’t use a chuckle in the depths of January. I am into cozy mysteries right now even though my TBR pile has a lot of paranormal.I only got part way through a couple and gave up.
We are off to the bookstore this afternoon so I can see what is available here in Western NY.
January 16th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Wow! Sorry to cause so much controversy. This makes me think I should put my ARC up on eBay along with the “Win a date with Barry Lyga” I want to do…
January 16th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
I just finished on the train SURVIVING DEMON ISLAND, by Jaci Burton. It’s the start of a really fun, kickass paranormal romance series.
And I’m giving away a copy of it on my blog. Go to Monday’s post to enter to win.
January 16th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Molly, good luck with that win-a-date thing.
Diana and Readerdiane, yay! Readerdiane, extra credit!
Christen, I’ll do something with your mega list in the next few days. As for the other, I’ve never gotten anything free as a result of blogging. Didn’t even know that was possible. But now that I know I could get free pole dancing lessons . . .
January 16th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
One of my friends told me to change my blog name to The Pole Dancing Librarian. I’m not sure how well that would go over, though…
January 16th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
My wife is reading Time Traveller’s Wife right now, but she seems to prefer Outlander to TTW, although she thinks TTW is really good.
What would you start a “Date with Barry Lyga” at?
Did Molly forget to raise her hand as librarian? How about eBay dates with librarians? Librarians are HOT!!!!
January 16th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Christen, I think the “The Pole Dancing Librarian” would go over as well as “The Women of Enron” did. Of course if you are of polish descent, no problem.
January 16th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Okay, Herb, that’s funny.
January 16th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I am polish…
January 16th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
i went on e-bay and didn’t see any bid site for “win a date with barry lyga”. what gives, is someone just toying with us or is this going to replace the chocolate contest?
also, i went to diana’s blog and couldn’t find the post about her unwittingly offending someone (did it have anything to do with dissing ben stiller?)
why are some seemingly simple tasks so difficult for some of us and others (patrick, for example) are completely undaunted by whatever life throws their way? (philosophical question posed by one who did not read a single book or single page from a single book this week–must read time traveler’s wife, must read time traveler’s wife, report next week.)
January 16th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
I’m finishing up Tithe by Holly Black this evening. Wanted to get my post in.
January 16th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Counted. Good job, Heather.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Tithe was great fun! I really enjoyed it. Holly’s terrific.
As to The Time Traveler’s Wife, I won’t say anything of substance in order to avoid spoiling our host, but I will say that it must have taken ungodly discipline and organizational skills to write that novel!
January 16th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
I am so on the 50 book train! I finished Passionate Thirst this last week! I am onto the first Kim Harrison book now…I’ll definitely be back next week!
January 16th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Good point, Annette. Also, check out my new WWPD? (What Would Patrick Do?) bracelets. They are very pretty and also, in a pinch, can double as ninja throwing stars.
January 16th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Yeah, uh, NFL playoffs. That makes this a bye week for reading.
January 16th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
Yay, Danne! Thanks for joining us!
January 17th, 2007 at 6:16 am
***SPOILER ALERT*** Time Traveller’s Wife II- The Sequel
Don’t you think the ending of TTW left it open for a Sequel where Clare develops her own latent mutant powers of Energy Wings and Crimson Beams from her finger tips and that the Evil 100ft tall King Magogon, Ruler of the Comet Empire, was not destroyed by Henry’s Black Hole at the end of book 1, and will return with his forces to attack the Earth again in book 2, TTW - King Magogon’s Return?
January 17th, 2007 at 10:14 am
Patrick,
Absolutely. Thats what I got out of it
January 17th, 2007 at 11:42 am
Read & loved Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess.
January 17th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Great! Welcome, Laura! (I just started reading your novel, Veil of Roses, this morning!)
January 17th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
OMG Patrick! I’m seriously laughing my ass off right now!!! That was excellent! And I think that sounds like a real winner of a sequel!
January 17th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
I’m a day late;-(
I finished reading Black by Ted Dekker this morning.
January 17th, 2007 at 5:47 pm
You’re fine, Kimmy. On to the next one!
January 17th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Well, I’m sold on Time Traveler’s Wife, which I wanted to read anyway, but before it was just for the cover, which is shallow and I should be ashamed.
This week I finished The History of Love by Nicole Krauss, and I cannot recommend it enough. It is hauntingly beautiful.
January 17th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
If that’s shallow, then I, too, am about an inch deep.
Thanks for the review on History of Love. That was on my list, and I already forgot about it.
