Tuesday 50-Book Book Club

It’s incredible what an incentive this is for me to keep reading every time I have a spare minute. Nothing like the pressure of reporting to all of you to keep me going. Thanks for giving me that extra boost.

This week I read Laura Fitzgerald’s lovely, romantic, culturally fascinating Veil of Roses, about a young Iranian woman whose parents manage to send her to America to finally experience what it’s like to be female and free. You may think you can imagine what it’s like to live in a repressive country like Iran, but until you read a book like this, you may not understand all of the implications. So many of the day-to-day freedoms we take for granted–even laughing with our friends in public, or looking someone of the opposite sex in the eye–can lead to trouble and persecution.

Plus the novel is romantic and has an absolutely perfect ending, so what more can you ask for than that?

And what did you all read this week?

[And remember, next Tuesday we'll be discussion The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, so be ready.]

I was on tour the past four days, but with all the flying, I was able to read three more Everworld books! I am now only two away from finishing the entire series.

  2. Christen Says:

I finished book number 6 this week… Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. (I had to read it for class.) I’m also more than halfway done Through the Looking Glass and I’m loving it! I haven’t read this book in over 13 years and I think it’s so much better than Alice’s Adventures…! For next week I have to finish up the first Harry Potter (for my Harry Potter book club meeting) and then I have to read (for class) The Outsiders and Catcher in the Rye (I decided to see why the killers love this book so much!). I’m going to be busy!

    …I miss my romance novels…

  3. Lady T Says:

I’ve been rereading TTW and having that great falling in love with the characters feeling again. Glad you gave me a good reason to revisit this,Robin.

I’m nearly finished with one book and have decided to choose between these two titles for my next read:Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai or Silent in the Grave by Deanna Rayburn. Inheritance of Loss won the Man Booker prize this year and the first couple of pages caught me right away. Silent in the Grave is a first novel-a Victorian murder mystery with a good sense of humor.

Hard to choose…I’ll gladly take any suggestions/recommendations!

  4. Herb Says:

Finished “The Swarm” by Frank Schatzing. He is a German author. His novel was #1 for 2 years in Germany. Speaks to todays concerns with mans relationship with the environment.

  5. Danne Cole Says:

I read Kim Harrison’s “Dead Witch Walking” and am already sucked into “The Good, the Bad and the Undead.” :o)

  6. Diana Says:

I read an ebook: Summer Devon’s REVEALING SKILLS.

I also finished my new proposal, so I’m free to tackle that doorstop of a TTW for next week.

Christen, I too like Looking Glass WAY better than Wonderland.

  7. readerdiane Says:

I just received Robin Owens latest fantasy and I am only a third through. I did read 3 other mysteries this week, long plane ride.
I have already read TTW and it is not a book that I care to re-read.

  8. robin Says:

Uh-oh, Readerdiane–that doesn’t sound good. Looking forward to having you in the discussion next Tuesday!

Everyone, great job on the reads this week! I really love that you guys are doing this, too. It pushes/inspires me, and I can always use some of that.

  9. Heather Harper Says:

This was an off week for me. I hope to clock in double duty nefore next Tuesday.

  10. Heather Harper Says:

That would be “before” for those of you not speaking idiot typist language.

  11. robin Says:

Heather, no pressure here. We’ll take what you can give–both in terms of reading and typing.

  12. Patrick Says:

Heather stared across the cavern at the Double Duty Nefore which was grunting and snorting and make a general nuisance of itself in the underground gardens of Doufar.

She couldn’t believe the Jedi Council sent _her_ of all people. Surely Diana wouldn’t have voted for that. Heather clearly had her hands full with the 19 younglings, four of which were clearly going to turn to the darkside; Timmy-Maul, Darth-Eric, and Yoko-Ono, at least.

    But now this…

Heather shook her head and drew her lightsabre, which hissed and wavered until she slammed the hilt with her other palm, and then it settled into that comforting hum and glow.

“Stop eating the ewoks,” said Heather as she headed toward the monsterous Double Duty Nefore.

  13. Kimmy Says:

I read two this week. I finished up the Circle Trilogy I was reading by Ted Dekker.
