Writing, reading, and other vital matters

Tuesday Book Club

First of all, in case you didn’t read the announcement a few days ago, we’re postponing our discussion of The Time Traveler’s Wife until next Tuesday, February 6th. It’s a big book, and one to be savored rather than gobbled down just to meet a deadline.

So my book report for the week is that I’m almost, almost done with The Time Traveler’s Wife, and probably will be by later today. I’m glad I’ve taken my time. I can’t wait until we all talk about it next week.

And what did you guys read this week?

  1. I hope to be finished with The Scent Of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson later today, or possibly tomorrow.

Excellent, excellent book. Moving, emotional, gritty, and the prose is to die for. It will be released in March. The sequel will be released the following month.

I read three books this week and loved all three. My first one was Protector of the Flight by Robin Owens, great fantasy. The second book was White Lies by Jayne Krentz, good romantic suspense. The third was a YA recommended by one of my students, Lightening Thief. It was so good that I am on the list to read the second in the series. All in all it was a very satisfying reading week.

  3. Lady T says:

I’m happy to report that I’ve finished Lisey’s Story by Stephen King which makes a grand total of five books completed for my list of 50. Last week,I was trying to pick between Inheritance of Loss and Silent In the Grave;SITG won. It’s a real good read so far.

Also rereading TTW still(such a luscious book, like a peach,I swear!)and am reading a couple of RH titles for blog review-Anatomy of a Boyfriend by Daria Snadowsky and Finn by Jon Clinch.

Anatomy of a Boyfriend is a YA first novel by an author who dedicated it to Judy Blume(one of my favorite writers as a kid). Finn is an adult first novel about Huck Finn’s father and what may have lead to his untimely demise. If you want to find more them, watch my blogspace:)!

Well, the “marathon” reading began last week! Since last Tuesday I have read Through the Looking Glass (loved it!), The Outsiders (loved it, too!), and Identity: Unknown (yay for smut!). I am currently working on The Catcher in The Rye. I need to finish it and post about it (for class) by tomorrow midnight. Yikes!

So, okay. I really loved Through the Looking Glass. I’ve read it before, but had to read it again for class, and I like this story so much more than Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I just love how she “travels” to the different chess locations, and then she becomes a Queen and the other Queens still talk down to her.

I also had to read The Outsiders for class. I actually never read it before (and I never saw the movie). Wow! What a great book! I really loved it! Oh, and I had no idea Hinton was a woman!!

Finally, this week I finished a lil Suzanne Brockmann smut (Identity: Unknown)! Fantabulous!! I want to be a character in one of her books!

I want to thank everyone for their book suggestions for my class. I’m working on The Catcher in the Rye right now and I’m actually enjoying it (I tried to read it in high school and hated it).

Oh… and although this is not book related I wanted to share. I’ve been taking my weekly pole dancing lessons for about a month now and last night I learned how to hang upside down from the pole! Very exciting stuff!! There was only minimal bruising involved =)

  5. robin says:

Wow, you guys did great this week! And Christen, you do realize you’re probably the only pole dancer any of us knows. Congrats on learning to hang upside down–I’m sure that takes a lot of stomach muscles, not to mention some bravery.

Keep it coming–who else has read what this past week?

  6. Diana says:

I actually read two books this week, and you’re just going to have to trust me on this one, since they were for a contest and I’m not allowed to say what they are.

Lady T, if you’re a fan of Judy Blume, you should check out EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT BEING A GIRL I LEARNED FROM JUDY BLUME, which is a tribute anthology coming out in June by a host of women’s fiction and YA writers (including yours truly). Okay… shameless self promo over.

  7. Christen says:

Ohh, Diana! That book sounds good! I love Judy Blume, too!!

  8. Deborah says:

I’m back and I need someone to fill me in on the 50 book challenge: is there a list for the Tuesday discussions? TTW sounds like it might be too ambitious for me to get done with by next Tuesday, but if I can get out and get the book I’ll give it a try-it sounds like it’s worth the effort. Right now I’m reading, “Focused Expressive Therapy: Freeing the Overcontrolled Patient” and hope to finish that by this weekend. Also continuing to work through Harry Potter with my children-we only read a chapter a night so it takes awhile. Robin, hope you are enjoying the movie trip!

  9. robin says:

Welcome back, Deborah! Happy to fill you in.

The Tuesday 50-Book Challenge (also sometimes just called the Tuesday Book Club) is my attempt to motivate all of us to read a book every week. It’s a total no-pressure situation–read what you want, read what you can, and show up on Tuesdays to report if you feel like it. I’m doing it mainly because if I know I have to show up here every Tuesday and say what I’ve read, I’ll tend to choose reading over other activities like watching TV. (But are we all clear that Lost is starting back up, and that will be discussed?)

The only reason we’re talking about The Time Traveler’s Wife next week is that it seems like so many people on the blog have read it or meant to, so I just made it our assignment so we could all show up at once and discuss it. I’m almost done with the book, so I can tell you you’ll love it, but if you can’t read it by next Tuesday then don’t look at our discussion that day. You don’t want to ruin any of it for yourself.

  10. Danne Cole says:

I am still trying to finish up Kim Harrison’s second book in the Rachel Morgan series. I have about a hundred pages so I should be able to kick it out tonight or tomorrow. Then on to something new. I signed up for a book club at my work and the first one is The Little Prince. Have a great week everyone!:)

  11. Christen says:

OMG, Robin! No spoilers…. but did you love the book?! Did you cry?? I cried like a baby!!!!!

  12. Lady T says:

Thanks,Diana-I’ll keep an eye for that book. Out of curiosity(and another chance for you to shamelessly plug:-),what JB book did you write about?

  13. annette says:

deborah, don’t you know the blog rules? it doesn’t matter if you are deep in the amazon rain forest searching for the botanical cure for aids, in coma following brain surgery, or on a cruise, uhmm, you must check in with the blog daily. you have a lot of chatchin’ up to do girl.

ps please read a book called “the time traveler’s wife” stat and e-mail a brief synopsis with pithy, insightful comments re characters and plot. thank you

  14. robin says:

Christen, haven’t quite finished it yet, so shhhh . . .

Danne, you realize you’ll get to double-dip on book clubs, right? Whatever you read for them gets counted here. Sweet!

  15. Christen says:

Whoops! I misread. I thought you said you were done with the book… not “almost”. Sorry!!!! =(

  16. Deborah says:

Annette, you know when I’m out of town undercover I’m prohibited from contact with the outside world, blog or no blog. But now I’m back I’ll get right on that TTW assignment stat.

  17. Kimmy says:

I finished Murder on St. Mark’s Place by Victoria Thompson.

  18. Lizzie says:

I read a chunk of Clausewitz’s On War… and many, many commentaries.

Did you know Hans Delbrück was a real person? I thought Mel Brooks made him up…(the brain Igor is supposed to get in Young Frankenstein.)

  19. robin says:

Lizzie, quite a factoid there. I had no idea.

    Good job, Kimmy!

  20. Danne Cole says:

Robin, I did in fact think of that! :) lol! But the Little Prince is only about 80 pages. I picked it up last night. I also picked up TTW and hope to read it this week…EEK!!! I’ve got a lot of reading to do!

  21. robin says:

Danne, 80 pages counts as a book. Include it.
