Tuesday Book Club
I forgot! Until Patrick reminded me two minutes ago, I had no idea what day it is! SO sorry. Here you go.
My great read for the week was Diana Peterfreund’s Under the Rose: An Ivy League Novel, the follow-up to last year’s Secret Society Girl, which was also great fun.
See, when you write YA, there isn’t a lot of sex in your life–in your books, I mean. At least not in my books. So I have to admit that one of the pleasures of Under the Rose was a hot, hot, hawt scene right there in the middle. Thank you, Diana. Plus there’s always that vicarious thrill for a state university girl to read a book about all the intrigue going on at Yale (sorry, “Eli” in the book–pshh). Plus a smart and smart-mouthed heroine, plus some hot guys–yep, this is the college life I never had and love to read about. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
So what about the rest of you? What did you plow through this week?

Hi, Robin and other cool folks! I’ve been reading the blog for weeks now and decided it was time to venture into your witty, intelligent banter with my own banter, which may or may not be witty or intelligent. Robin, I found you here (http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6464856.html?nid=2788) and have been a fan ever since. I eagerly wait for the moment when I can get my hands on your book. Now back to the topic of this particular post.
It’s been ages since I’ve plowed through a non-Potter book in a week (well, it’s been the three years since my oldest daughter’s birth). I hope, though, that your book club will motivate me to use my few spare moments to read as many words as possible.
Reading now: kira-kira (Cynthia Kadohata)
Just read: The Dark Is Rising (Susan Cooper) for the second time; love her lyrical writing, palpable sense of danger, strong characters, and vivid environments, even though the rereading was slow for me on the heels of Deathly Hallows
Up next: Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature (what else by who else?!)
Now, if I can tame my growing addiction to you people and your blogs, I might find time to read some of the other tantalizing books you recommend (hello, Stephenie Meyer!), even with two little girls to raise, a husband to love, contract editing to do, and a floundering YA novel to write.

Kelley, welcome! So glad you de-lurked and decided to come out and play with us.
I totally understand that comment about a book being slow on the heels of Deathly Hallows. That’s a pretty high standard J.K. set for tension, shocking revelations, etc. We’re all spoiled.
And I know what you mean about the addiction of the blogs. As a nonreformed addict, I have no advice to offer. But good luck with your writing! We’re here for you!

That’s okay,Robin-those long holiday weekends will throw you off, bigtime. I spend most of mine reading Heartsick by Chelsea Cain, which is a very twisted thriller about a cop and his love/hate relationship with the serial killer gal he still visits in prison after she tortured him for ten days. Not a book you want to get into after an Italian dinner, but a good book nonetheless.
Also enjoying The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly and hope to finish up Caspian Rain by the end of the week. Oh,and I cashed in some of my QPC points and should be getting the Phillip Pullman Trilogy in the mail soon. With The Golden Compass about to hit theaters,I really should tackle the books.

Great article! You know, the interesting thing is — Robin didn’t stop possessing people with the devil at age thirteen.
She possessed me with the devil once.
I mean, there’s no other explanation to how I ended up on Rte 10 in New Mexico wearing a pink bikini top and no pants carrying an empty bottle of Rumple Minze® peppermint liqueur and a stolen credit card.

“Not a book you want to get into after an Italian dinner, but a good book nonetheless.” Ha! Thanks for the warning, Lady T! And I’m SO happy you’re finally getting to Philip Pullman! You’re going to love those.
Patrick, shhh. I told you that was an accident. Plus I can see blaming me if it happened once, but from what I understand you’ve made a habit of it. Put some pants on, man, and lay off the peppermint booze.

Well, once I had an excuse, why stop?

Robin, just wanted you to know you made my day. Thanks for your comment on my own meager blog and for your quick welcome into your community. I look forward to lots more conversing with all of you!

Welcome, Kelley!
I read a lot this week, probably due to the fact I’m trying to get a submission in…
Let’s see:
Finished BOY TOY (Loved it!)
Read EVOLUTION, ME & OTHER FREAKS OF NATURE (Loved it!)
Read PLAN B by Jonathan Tropper (Loved it!)
Am muddling through THE GRAPES OF WRATH (I forgot how long it is!) and have begun THE CUP OF JOE by Jonathan Tropper.

I finished your book, Robin, and thought it just terrific! Having a middle-schooler, the topic was timely. The characters were engaging (that Casey is a sweetheart, I’ll put my order in for an older real -life him too), and the writing so nicely executed! I wish the science teacher was a ‘real’ person too because I would love to meet her! I was glad to find the parents gettin’ with it toward the end because I was getting a little peeved at them. I also want one of those yellow T-shirts: any plans to market those?

I pretty much read the same old stuff this past week. I read a fun little romance called Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband. The ending was cool, when the time traveling woman was sent back to the future, only to come back to the past with her Special Recon brothers to help save her highland husband. =)
I read another romance that I did not care for. It was called Night After Night. It wasn’t too great.
I did read another Ranma 1/2 (I just finished volume 10). I love this graphic novel! Oh, and I read book 3 (Safe House) of Meg Cabot’s 1-800-Where-R-You series. These are great books, too!
That’s it for me!

earth to rb, via kelley. i’ve been known to visit this blog from time to time (my busy, incredibly important schedule permitting) and to actually post the occasional witty/really funny/hysterical/ intelligent/poignant (okay maybe not the last one) comment.
question, why had i never heard of the pw interview before kelley stepped forward from the shadows of the lurk?
this is not info you are at liberty to keep to yourself rb–we own you.

Thanks, Robin! LOL on the sex scene. I must say, I’m surprised at how many people have commented on that, but maybe it’s because I read so much romance, and I’m used to seeing love scenes in books?
Christen, I know the person who wrote Thirty Nights… she’s with my literary agency.
I read WICKED LOVELY this week. It was part of the package of books my editor at Harper Collins sent to me.
September 4th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Just to update you on my HP status… I’m now about halfway through book 5, Order of the Phoenix.
September 4th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Laura, I fully recognize the signs of needing to finish your own book. We hardly read so much of other people’s books when we’re avoiding our own, hm?
Diana, don’t you love getting free books from your publisher? Such a nice beni.
Annette, you know I’m covert that way. Don’t really feel right talking about myself all the time (unless it involves what I’m eating, what I’m reading, big social flubs I’ve made, etc.).
Christen, good list! Nice to see you reading so much, even when you’re not required to for grad school.
Deborah, thank you!! How nice! As for the yellow t-shirts, those would be fun to offer, wouldn’t they? I also like some of the other ones in the book. I’d gladly wear “Brainiacs Unite.”
Kimmy, hurry! Catch up! Go! You have such a treat waiting for you in books 6 & 7!
September 4th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Diana… that is so cool that you know that author! It was a super fun book, especially for a first book. I keep waiting to travel back in time and meet my second husband!
September 4th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
I read Boy Toy- great book, Barry! Wow.
Next I enjoyed The Shadow Thieves by Anne Ursu, the first in a fantasy series that I wanted to read because it seemed similar to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Same premise: What if Greek mythology is real? And you’re a teenager/reluctant hero that must save the world?
Robin, I agree with Deborah about the shirts. Marketing idea: “Shirts by Josh.”
Diana, I wonder what your opinion was of Wicked Lovely? It’s on my mile-high “to read” pile.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:29 am
I was confused about what day it was, too…the Monday holiday threw me off. I (of course) read that new Evolution book…have you heard of it? I think it’s by someone named Robin Brande. Loved it and will recommend it to all my friends. Also am finishing up Old Souls–the Scientific Evidence for Past Lives…just okay, and have Started Fan Boy and Goth Girl, which Patrick lent me.
September 6th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Michelle, wasn’t Boy Toy just incredible? And to think we know the guy who wrote it. Inside tip: he eats oatmeal every morning just like the rest of us.
Judy, thank you!! I’m so happy you loved it! Yay!
