Tuesday Book Club

Feast or famine: two novels last week, none this week. Just a secret research book.

So since I have nothing more to say, let’s get right to you guys. What fabulous books did you read last week that I’m now going to have to add to my already enormous pile? (I both bless you and curse you for these recommendations, you know.)

Let’s hear it.

  1. Jone Says:

I am glad to see that someone else has the feast or famine weeks. I am reading Incendiary by Cleve. Intense, sad, funny at times. I should be reading more of my kidlit books but am hooked on this one at the moment. Seems like I get into bed and fall a sleep. School beginnings are like that.

  2. Judy Says:

I read Hoot, because that is what my grandson was reading. Also read a book by Jude Devereaux–can’t remember the exact title, but but was set in the Florida Everglades…

    Judy

  3. Sara Says:

Story of a Girl: couldn’t go to bed until I read to the end. Deanna Lambert, you got into my heart.

Punk Farm: OMG. I am such a PunkFarmHead now.

The Book Thief. Blogged about my irrational love for it. Kicked Robin’s butt to read it.

Evolution, Me, & Other Freaks of Nature: sorry, couldn’t wait until Tuesday and I blabbed about it on the Friday “Good Things List.” Because it was a really good thing.

Plus, my usual newspapers, cooking magazines, and that awesome Horn Book issue on “Boys and Girls.”

    Oh, and some takeout menus.

  4. Heather Harper Says:

I’m reading The Roofer by Erica Orloff.

  5. Kimmy Says:

I finished Half-Blood Prince AND I’m only 200 pages away from finishing Deathly Hallows! I suspect by tomorrow I’ll be officially finished with the series.

I kinda hate to see it end.

  6. Lady T Says:

Truly a feast for me this week-I finished Before I Die(what a sad, sweet book) and Odd Mom Out and am rereading Persuasion(need a quick Austen fix!). I’ve starting the new Richard Russo,Bridge of Sighs, and still in the early stages with The Golden Compass(so far,so good).

I’m also going to have my very first blog contest, with Alice Sebold’s The Almost Moon as the Grand Prize. There’s some details at my blog today(incredibly shameless plug)and more on October 1. This contest requires some creative writing skills,so perhaps I may some of you there!

  7. Lady T Says:

That last sentence should read “see some of you there”. Yep,my brain’s on track today…NOT!

  8. Kelley Says:

Unfortunately, I’m smothered with editing work at the moment, so my fun reading time is going to that (which makes it not so fun), but I have managed to get some “snacks” now and then–articles in Parenting magazine here, some from Reader’s Digest there. Heck, on weeks like these, even reading product descriptions in a catalogue counts! And, of course, blogs!

Let us know what you think of Book 7, Kimmy! And Lady T, I want to know what you think of Golden Compass too.

  9. Lady S. Says:

I’m still reading Eat Pray Love, but only because I’m rationing it for myself. (She’s in India now…)

I’m reading a pretty dreadful children’s historical mystery (for a project) atm - think I won’t name it - but I’m almost finished and then I’ll start Linda Buckley-Archer’s The Tar Man - yay! Really liked Gideon the Cutpurse and I expect this one will be great too. And it’s legitimate project-reading too - even more yay!

  10. Sarah Miller Says:

I was SO impressed with Andrew Clements’s “No Talking!” IMO it’s the best book he’s written since “Frindle.”

  11. Patrick, the Space Lord Says:

So, I didn’t read anything, but did anyone notice this?

  12. Dylan Says:

Still working on Dairy Queen and now I’ve also started Garden of Shadows the prequal to Flowers in the Attic SOOO good! :)BTW Robin did you ever get a chance to see the cover I made for the second Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature book?

  13. Jen Robinson Says:

I read this book called Evolution, Me, & Other Freaks of Nature. I quite liked it (grin).

Right now I’m reading Girl Overboard, by Justina Chen Headley. Also excellent. I find myself wondering about it when I’m not reading it, which is always a good sign.

Over the weekend I read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, and couldn’t put it down.

Am envious of Lady S for having Tar Man.

  14. Michelle Says:

I envy Kimmy for getting to enjoy the ending of HP 7 for the first time. Ahh.

Now that Sarah says “No Talking” is so good, I’ll have to bump it up the “gotta read” list. Thanks.

I read “Elijah of Buxton” by Christopher Paul Curtis, and I think it’s his best book ever. I liked it even better than “Watsons Go To Birmingham.” He is an amazing storyteller. Highly recommended!

  15. Barry Says:

Thanks for noticing, Patrick. I’m far too humble to point out that I won the contest…

…or to mention the book I read for #50…

  16. Kimmy Says:

I finished book 7 last night! I stayed up entirely too late, but I could not put it down. It was incredible, absolutely incredible. I loved it!

  17. Molly Says:

Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan (LOVE!)
and Lust Killer by Ann Rule (scary, scary stuff)

Developing a reading list for the cruise and am taking suggestions…already have The Road by Cormac McCarthy and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak…

  18. Little Willow Says:

    Yesterday’s books:

Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden (SO GOOD - What a unique twist on HCA’s Soldier)

Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman (Amazing - I want to see this live now!)

Babymouse: Skater Girl by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm (adorable)

  19. Lady S. Says:

Jen - I may get The Tar Man (and Forever Rose and Here Lies Arthur) first, but YOU get to go to the kidlit conference…

*sobs at the thought of how long it’ll be before there’s one on this continent*

  20. bj Says:

Yeah, I know I’m behind on reporting in. It’s been that kind of week.

I bought and read two books back to back. You may have heard of them. ;)

One was by some woman named Robin Brande, and entitled “Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature”.

The other was some dude named Barry, and called “Boy Toy”.

Wow. Wow wow wow. I am in awe of both of you.

Both books, in very different ways, brought me right back to what it was like being in High School and dealing with all that teen angst and confusion.

Unique Visitors? You paid attention! ;)

  21. RM1(SS) (ret) Says:

I never remember to visit the Tuesday Book Club on Tuesday. Last Tuesday I was reading Tragedy at Honda (naval history, by Charles A Lockwood and Hans Christian Adamson) and The Cat Who Went up the Creek (mystery, by Lilian Jackson Braun).

  22. robin Says:

This is weird–I know I posted some comments back to you guys on here. Sigh. I still haven’t switched to the new computer. Too many wires to deal with right now.

So let me just say, great work this week. Thank you, BJ, Sara, and Jen for reading my book! It always makes me feel strangely shy when I hear someone I know has read it. Look away.

Kimmy, I share your love for HP7. I could read it again and again, and will.

Lady T, I need to read Before I Die soon! I keep hearing so many great things about it.

All the rest of you, I have to go to bed now, but your selections are duly noted! Thanks, as always, for reporting in. You keep my Reader Brain constantly craving. And that’s a good thing.

  23. robin Says:

Dylan, I forgot who you are on BibleGrrrl. Which cover is yours?

  24. Dylan Says:

i’m djpdancer it’s the one with jesus and darwin. :)

  25. robin Says:

Dylan, I love that cover! I noticed it right away–how could you not with Jesus and Darwin standing there reaching out to each other like that? Excellent work!!
