Tuesday Book Club

No novels this week. Instead some reading on the Tao and Chi Nei Tsang (remember this? That’s Chi Nei Tsang). (By the way, I couldn’t remember what I called that post, so I just did a search on my blog for “belly poking.” I’m laughing right now as I type that. It prompted one of my favorite comment threads ever.)

Anyway, so I read Gilles Marin’s Five Elements, Six Conditions. Excellent. So much useful philosophy and the best meditation exercises I’ve ever done. They’ve been putting me out regularly all week long.

You?

Had never read the belly massage post until now. I don’t know about massaging the belly button, my mother(a nurse) was fanatic about clean belly buttons. But what a gret experince. I get massages, regularly the deep kind, the kind where falling asleep is not an option.
Oh, we are supposed to talk about our reading this week…am in the middle of Astid and Veronika by Linda Olsson. The writing is almost poetic. I am also reading the standards for the national boards, exciting stuff. I read on a discussion board that listening (or reading) to as many Newbery Awards as possible is a helpful thing to do, so I am compiling a list.
Have you read The Tao of Pooh? Love it.

hi bloggies, been traveling the world–to places where computers don’t exist (well, where my computer doesn’t exist).
will everyone please read “three cups of tea”. a real life story about a real life good person following his passion. i couldn’t put it down (plus i was stuck on a plane for 12 hrs. really no where to put it down).

  3. jules says:

I’m reading Leonard Marcus’ wonderful new book about the history of the Golden Books. And a YA novel I’ve been reading for-freakin’-ever now, and I’m not going to give up on it (it’s not the novel’s fault; it’s me being too busy). And I finished Ellen Kushner’s The Golden Dreydll, as I’m about to start reviewing some holiday titles at 7-Imp (I hope).

And last weekend I finished Ann Patchett’s Run, which is exquisite. But I’m going to let it be one novel I don’t review at 7-Imp; every now and then, I’m gonna cut myself a break.

  4. jules says:

    Make that “Dreydl.”

  5. Katie Sis says:

I’m currently reading Peter and the Starcatchers and Twilight.

  6. I’m reading Boy Toy and Tithe

  7. Lady T says:

The newest things that I’m reading are Kitchen Confidential(Bourdain’s writing is amazingly arrogant but very entertaining)and Songs Without Words by Ann Packer.

I was a big fan of Packer’s Dive From Clausen’s Pier(I almost met her once, but my father passed away that week so I didn’t work that book signing)and while her new novel starts out slow,it gains momentum pretty quickly.

  8. I read a book called “Does My Head Look Big In This?” about a Muslim teen in Australian who decides to wear hijab. I also finished listening to “Surprised By Joy”… or was that last week? And I’m about to finish “The Four Loves”, and then I think I’d better find something to read besides CS Lewis for a while. I don’t want to get burned out.

  9. Kimmy says:

I finished two books this week!

Murder in Chinatown by Victoria Thompson and Snobbery with Violence by Marion Chesney.

  10. Sara says:

I’m reading Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up. Jury’s still out. I may blog about it.

Jules, I want that Leonard Marcus book! He’s always so scholarly, and yet so completely compelling when he writes about children’s books.

Katie, I love C.S. Lewis. My daughter’s reading The Screwtape Letters now, and loving it. He’s so wicked.

  11. Lady-S says:

I finished Time Runners: Rewind Assassin by Justin Richards, which was — not my favourite. It might be a lot of people’s cups of tea, but read right after Skulduggery Pleasant the adventure didn’t seem as much fun, and comparing it to Cue for Treason made the historical part pretty meh. The time travel is very twisty though. Now I’m reading Spanking Shakespeare – recommended by — who was it who recommended it now? :) It’s giving new meaning to the phrase ‘painfully funny’!

  12. I’m actually still reading Uglies. It’s taking me longer than normal to read because I keep misplacing the book.

  13. Patrick says:

I read Pretties yesterday. Much nicer to read a book about Pretty people rather than Uglies.

  14. Shai says:

I finished Wake. Such a quick read and such an interesting book. It got better as it got closer to the end.

  15. Alkelda says:

I’m reading Passage, a near-death experience (in a scientific way!) novel by Connie Willis, at John Peters’ recommendation. He’s right– it’s much, much too long (it took forever,it seemed, for the main character to get to the point where she volunteered to do the NDE simulation), but so far it’s a compelling read.

  16. I read THE BREAKOUT PRINCIPLE, on creativity, and it was good but could have been a magazine article rather than a book, in my opinion.

  17. robin says:

Katie A., if you’re stopping reading C.S. Lewis, I think I need to start. I’ll confess I’ve only read one thing by him–the first of the Narnia series. But I’ve wanted to read his nonfiction for a while now. What one would you suggest I start with?

Jone, I have read snippets of The Tao of Pooh. I recall it was pretty sweet. Glad to hear you’re a regular massagee–I feel it’s important for writers in particular to keep their shoulders, wrists, and neck in supple working order. That’s part of our equipment.

Welcome back, Annette! Hope Italy was everything you dreamed it would be–especially in the food department. I’ll add Three Cups of Tea to my memoir list. Thanks for the tip.

Jules, how are you fitting in so much reading lately? You seem so incredibly busy running the Robert’s Snow project at Seven Imp–are you magically inventing new hours each day?

Katie Sis, what do you think of Peter and the Starcatchers? Worth adding to the TBR pile?

Hi, Brooke, welcome! I’ve read Boy Toy (we’re all friends with the author here), but not Tithe. Do you like it?

Lady T, I love your description of Bourdain’s writing–sounds like just how he comes across on TV. Once again you’ve got a diverse reading list going this week. What about all those books you picked up at the garage sale or whatever last week? Are you going to have to invent more time like Jules?

Kimmy, two books! Yay! And they don’t sound too relaxing, either. Murder and mayhem and such. Whatever does it for you! Hey, now that you finally finished the Harry Potter series a while back, aren’t you going to start on Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials? The movie of part one, The Golden Compass is coming out next month, I think. You’ll love those books!

Sara, are you thinking of doing some improv? Or do the tips relate to writing, too?

Lady S, I can’t wait until you finish Spanking Shakespeare! I want to know what you think.

Heather, I’ve had Uglies on my shelf too long. It’s just so thick–feels like a commitment. Let me know if you love it, though. I’m willing to commit for love.

Patrick, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe I should skip Uglies and go straight to Pretties. I wouldn’t want to read anything, you know, unpleasant. Delicate flower and all.

Shai, glad you read Wake! Do you agree about the hot guy? And the wild plot? I really enjoyed that book.

Alkelda, I’ve never heard of that one. Is it new or old?

Laura, good to know. I appreciate that you’re reading all those craft books and weeding through them for the rest of us.

  18. Michelle says:

I read Faeries of Dreamdark: Blackbringer by Laini Taylor. Wow.
It took a while to really get into it but then I was hooked by the interesting characters, the fabulous plot, and beautiful writing.

Robin, I know you asked Katie’s Sis’s opinion about Peter & The Starcatchers and not mine but I can’t resist: YES it is worth adding to the ever-growing TBR pile.

  19. Katie Sis says:

Robin I’m only a few chapters into Peter and the Starcatchers, but so far it’s been good.

  20. Molly says:

Okay, I’m still starting things and not finishing them. But, I have started both of the books I promised myself (and Robin) that I’d read by year’s end. And since I’m spending Thanksgiving in solitude (unless you count Ben and Jerry as company) I should be able to get some reading done very soon.

  21. Lady T says:

Robin, those rummage sale books are in their own special pile, amongst the many others in my vault:) I like the inventing time idea, altho I may be better off just renting a spare hour or two.

  22. Alkelda says:

Robin– It’s an older book. And now I’m finally finished. There was a compelling storyline in PASSAGE that got buried (no pun intended) in too much needless text.

  23. Shai says:

Totally hot boy! I would have been all over that in high school! go figure, I married a bald man. AKA Mr. Clean. haha
And the last half of the book really threw me. I wasn’t expecting that!
Gotta love books like that! On to the next one! :)

  24. robin says:

Michelle, I loved that book, too! So glad you got to read it. And thanks for chiming in about Peter and the Starcatchers.

Did you hear what she said, Katie Sis?

Molly, enjoy your Ben and Jerry’s. Nothing wrong with a Thanksgiving spent with ice cream and books. I used to spend mine with Baskin Robbins (a pint all to myself) and a stack of rented movies. Pretty plush.

Lady T, look away from the blog! Read! You’re making me nervous with all that backlog!

    Alkelda, good to know.

Shai, the men we marry are in their own special category. Doesn’t mean we can’t admire the scenery in books and movies. I mean, I like Aragorn, but I’m never going to leave my husband for him. Sorry, Viggo.

  25. Christen says:

    ::waves hi::

Hi Robin! Wow! I totally went MIA! I just wanted to drop in and say hello!

Oh, and I read Lean Mean 13 this past week. It was wonderful! No surprise, right?

  26. robin says:

Christen, I kid you not–I was just thinking about you yesterday, wondering where you’d gone off to. Welcome back!

  27. Yesterday, I read:
    Freak by Marcella Pixley
    Chess Rumble by G. Neri
From the Desk of Septina Nash: The Penguins of Doom by Greg R. Fishbone

  28. I would start with Mere Christianity and go from there.

  29. Dylan says:

Oh drear late on this one! I read A Certain Slant of Light, which I’m sorry I just didn’t like at all I was so dissapointed with it, and On the Bright Side, I’m Now The Girlsfriend of a Sex God. Awkward I know! XD it’s the second in the georgia nicolson series and it was really good as per usual! XD So I got the 3rd of that which I’m reading now, and also I’m reading Darcy’s Story, and Blood which I don’t like either… Havn’t read anything I truly loved latly though =/ any suggestions?
