Tuesday Book Club
Didn’t read a dang thing all week, but I did see sixteen movies at Sundance, so I’d say it was a week well spent.
But I know the rest of you are doing much better on your reading goals for the year. So what did you read this week?

The other day,I finished up a JA mystery called North by Northanger Abbey by Carrie Bebris(she has Mr. and Mrs. Darcy as sort of a Nick and Nora detective team)and am currently devouring Oil! by Upton Sinclair.
Yes,I put Martin Chuzzlewit aside, but only until Oil! is done(which I can easily justify, since the Upton Sinclair book is the basis for There Will Be Blood,a major league Oscar contender).

I’m reading an author’s unpublished manuscript, which I said I’d never do. Ahem. Breaking the law, breaking the law.
I finished David Almond’s My Dad’s a Birdman, which puts the very “quirk” in “quirky.”
I’m reading some KILLER picture book biographies, which I hope to post about soon.
Robin, glad you enjoyed Sundance.
Sara H. is being featured over at 7-Imp, by the way. Yes, I’m plugging that, ’cause Sara rocks. And rawks, as the young ‘uns say.

P.S. I’m also reading the second Kiki Strike book from last year. I’m so behind. Once I’m done with it, Eisha and I are going to co-review it along with another great novel by a certain someone. It’s about evolution.
Sigh. I’m so slow sometimes.
Aw, my anti-spam word is “hugs.” What a nice anti-spammer.

Freaky Green Eyes by Joyce Carol Oates and Boot Camp by Todd Strasser. Lots of YA for me lately. Freaky Green Eyes really affected me. Got really into it. Boot Camp…eh.

Just back from a long weekend in York (the one in England, just to be clear!), so am busily reading the backlog of blogs, including your Sundance ones, which are great.
This week I read Nancy Farmer’s The Land of Silver Apples, which was really something else. More than a bit shaky on the characterization at times, I thought, but it had everything a myth&legend-lover’s heart could desire. And then some. Mostly done really well too. And an unusual element which I loved was the way the Christians and magic-users generally got along quite peacefully (it’s set in 8th century Britain, so there’s a lot of intermingling). I didn’t love it as unequivocally as The Sea of Trolls, but will definitely read the third in the trilogy whenever it’s out.
I finished that in Bristol airport, and managed to pick up The Penderwicks there, which I’ve nearly finished now. It’s wonderful, and I’m very pleased to see there’s a sequel due out soon. That family is one I could spend a lot of time with, I think!

I am in the middle of three books right now. The first one is, Stephen King’s On Writing, which I am listening to on tape. Secondly, I am reading the Hero Bear, a graphic novel by Mike Kunkel. So CUTE! Finally, I am reading Wil Wheaton’s Space Oddity. Another hi-freaken-larious book!
I currently finished another graphic novel by Mike Kunkel called The Land of Sokmunster. This is a great book for any age!

I have read three kidlit sequels this week…
Highly recommend The Softwire: Betrayal on Orbis 2 by PJ Haarsma. It will be available soon! This is the sequel to his excellent first Sci-fi adventure The Softwire: Virus On Orbis 1.
I also enjoyed Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy by Ally Carter.
And finally, Caleb’s Story by Patricia MacLachlan (one of the sequels to Sarah Plain & Tall).

I finished reading Faerie Lord by Herbie Brennen and have started on The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray.

Today, I read Tennyson by Lesley M.M. Blume (excellent) and am about to dive happily into Poison Ink by Christopher Golden.

Jules, My anti-spam word was also “hugs.”
Robin, do you get to pick out the anti-spam words?
I’ve been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, which is making me think a lot. Mostly, it’s making me think that I absolutely have to try to make cheese. Kingsolver makes it sound so fun, and I seriously love cheese. I also want to make my own dried tomatoes, which–DUH– why have I never tried this before?

I’m finally more than halfway through Bray’s Rebel Angels, and I’m working my way through Italy with Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love). Maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll actually have a finished book to discuss! But I’m loving every slow minute of my reading. (Thanks, Sis, for the recommendation of Bray.)

I just finished The Thief with my students. I have ordered the next 2 in the series but I have read some reviews and am not sure if I can read The Queen of Attolia with 7th graders. Has anyone read it?
I have been reading James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club series-just finished #4. Some of it is pretty violent. He also killed off a major character. I thought that was a no-no. It almost made me stop reading the series-I was not a happy camper.
