Tuesday Book Club
One of the things I love so much about my job is that so often the books I want to read do double-duty as research for novels I’m either working on or want to write.
So this week I got to read two more of Dr. Brian Weiss’s books about reincarnation: Same Soul, Many Bodies and Only Love Is Real. Fabulous, both of them. What I love about Dr. Weiss’s perspective is that he’s a highly-respected, science-minded psychiatrist who began his research into reincarnation and past-life regression as a total skeptic, but has come around as a result of experiences with patient after patient. I like cold hard facts (even though I know a lot of you still wouldn’t be convinced. Check out our earlier discussions here and here.)
What’s up in your reading world?

I’m still reading Night of the Soul Stealer by Joseph Delaney. I bought two new books that I’m looking forward to reading, Fly By Night by Diane Hardinge and The Book of Mordred by Vivian Van Velde. At least I think those are the authors names.

Aww, my spam word is “hugs”!
This week, I read Sarah Dessen’s “Dreamland.” It was the first Sarah Dessen book I’d ever read, and I’m definitely going to read more. I also started “Spanking Shakespeare”, recommended by some crazy author I know.

I am still reading The Softwire Betrayal on Orbis 2. It is actually really good, especially for a sequel and of course..it’s PJ! Plus, if you start with #2, you get a bit of background at the beginning, so you can’t really get too lost if you haven’t read #1.
I am also listening to Steven King’s On Writing. I am really enjoying it and getting so much out of it!

I’m still in the midst of a few books myself and hoping to finish up The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes this week for review. Champing at the bit to start reading Twilight, but I need to finish atleast one other book before I do so.

I wanted to correct one of the author’s names I wrote. Her name is Frances Hardinge. And Sarah Dessen is a great writer, definitely read more of her books Katie A.

I had the pleasure of reading three marvelous books this week, all that I would recommend:
Savvy by Ingrid Law
Tiger, Tiger by Lynne Reid Banks
The Journal of Curious Letters (The 13th Reality)by James Dashner
Obviously, my house is a wreck.
I also finished listening to James Owen’s fabulous book Here, There Be Dragons. I read the novel last year, and have been enjoying listening to the audio book with my kids on our daily commute. I appreciated it even more the second time, particularly with the
incredible narration. My kids have enjoyed it, too. My nine-year-old liked it so much that he read the (bound) book on his own so he wouldn’t have to wait (since we only listen when driving). He immediately started reading the second book on his own (The Search For The Red Dragon). He is a reluctant reader, so anything that gets him this excited to read is amazing!

I’m finishing my ARC of Lady and the Vamp by Michelle Rowen.

I’m reading the Maggie Valley trilogy by Kerry Madden, and enjoying the books quite a lot. Still wishing for more reading time, though…

I’m reading Looking for Alaska, which is really good but is taking me a long time to read because I keep getting distracted by stupid things like going to work. (Since I’m a librarian, work should NOT be getting in the way of my reading, right? I am supposed to be well-informed about books, am I not?)

That happens to me a lot too! Actually I always get ideas from books too! XD guess that’s not so good, but oh well! >__

Adrienne, I kind of have the opposite problem: sometimes my reading interferes with my work (writing). But what a nice problem to have. Have you read John Green’s other book, An Abundance of Katherines? I love both of them, but I love Abundance more because it’s so funny. And it’s going to be a movie!
Dylan, I get lots of my ideas from books, too. It’s always good to see what other writers are doing, because you see how much more is possible.
Jen, I’m still wishing for you to have more reading time, too. You usually tear it up on your annual book count, and I hope you can continue. Dang work.
Heather, don’t you love the privilege of reading people’s ARCs? It feels so inner circle.
Michelle, woo-hoo! Big reading week! Love “Obviously, my house is a wreck.” Too bad–that’s what next weekend is for. Meanwhile, read on!
Katie Sis, I’ve enjoyed the Sarah Dessen books I’ve read, too. So quiet and deep, don’t you think?
Lady T, can’t wait to hear what you think of Twilight! But you’re so disciplined about reading other books first–impressive. You probably actually work through your TBR pile every year, don’t you?
Shai, I love Stephen King’s On Writing, too. Great practical information, plus all that juicy behind-the-scenes stuff. Good choice! And I’m glad you’re enjoying PJ Haarsma’s second book! He’s such a doll.
Katie A., of course you got “hugs.” I programmed it that way. Glad to know you’ve got Spanking Shakespeare in hand. Such a great book.

Yes, I *loved* Katherines, and, so far, I think it’s the better novel. The prose is definitely more polished, which is saying something, since Alaska is excellent. Those footnotes in Katherines slayed me, too. So fun in the the most wonderful nerdy way.

I do my best to work my way thru my various TBR piles but even with making a formal list, there’s always something that I haven’t gotten to yet. There are times when I drop everything that I’m currently reading to focus on one particular book(a good example of that is the last Harry Potter book).
Don’t worry,Robin-I will most definitely give you an earful about Twilight as soon as I’m fully into it:)
