Tuesday Book Club–New Year, A Fresh 50 Books!
Hello, all my fellow book clubbers, and Happy New Year! I’m so happy I could spit. I love the changeover. I’m ready for it.
So what say we close out our year of reading, and set up a new goal of reading 50 more books this year? As always, it’s just a goal, not a requirement–nothing to get all twisted or stressed about. I just think it makes for a nice life when we try to read a different book every week or so–doesn’t that sound nice to you?
So let’s hear what you read last week, but then we’re clearing the slate and starting back at zero. I love that prospect–a whole other fifty (or maybe more!) books I’ll have the pleasure of reading this year. Yippee!
Report away. My little nephew is sick, so we’re delaying the campout for a few weeks. I’ll just be here, reading . . .

I read When Ghosts Speak by Mary Ann Winkowski. She’s a consultant for the CBS show The Ghost Whisperer.

Happy New Year of reading! I’m currently in the midst of The Winter Rose by Jennifer Donnelly,and might even finish it by the end of the week(if not sooner). Also reading American Shaolin by Matthew Polly,which is about the author’s going to China at age 19 to study kung fu at the Shaolin Temple,like David Carradine’s character did on TV.

Happy New Year!
It was a good week of reading even with all of the festivities-school is out.
I read-Keepers of the Flame by Robin Owens,The Queen Dragon by Shana Abe and Carrie and the Silver Bullet. These are 3 of my favorite series so it was like a mini-Christmas present to myself. I passed the books on to my daughter-recommending the Keepers of the Flame first-it is a modern fantasy-light but with the requisite HEA.
I made the goal of 50+ books this year.;)

I finished up the year with New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. A great way to end the year!
It was my 50th book too! I feel so accomplished.

I reread The Supernaturalist this week, mostly because it’s short and I was in the mood for some fresh, tasy emo. And it most definitely was emo. But Stefan Bashkir, one of the mains, is the kind of character I just like to read about: partially self-tossed into a situation he’s completely not ready for.
And only Eoin Colfer could pull off a character named Ditto, though he didn’t do as much with it as he could have.

I just reread Sylvia Engdahl’s updated version of Journey Between Worlds, which I think was the first book she ever wrote. It’s about a young woman’s reluctant trip from Earth to Mars. Engdahl is one of the people who’s convinced that what will save humanity is expansion to the stars– if we devote our energies into space exploration, we’ll divert energy away from warfare. I for one would like to travel the stars the Doctor Who way– visit other planets in other galaxies and return home in time to read to my daughter in the evenings!

Hey, I just found your site yesterday and read as many backposts as I could before my friends called wondering where the heck I was. I’m gonna try this fifty book thing. Starting with Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill. I’m a middle school librarian (just started!) and that’s our book club pick.

Alkelda, I’m with you–the kind of space travel that sounds best is the one where you go away, have exotic adventures, and come back in time to sleep in your own bed.
Miri, I think this is the year I need to finally read some Eoin Colfer. You’ve been reading his stuff for years, haven’t you? What do you suggest I start with?
Dylan, it’s great to use a winter vacation for reading gobs and gobs. Can’t wait to see your report next Tuesday!
Heather, 33 is fabulous–especially when that’s more than the year before. So maybe this year even more than that? No pressure–just something fun to read toward.

Readerdiane, congratulations on reaching 50+ this year! How great. And I’m totally with you on the requisite HEA. I’m over dark endings in books and movies. My time is too valuable.

Patrick, nice choice. I looked at that Romantic Times list–huge! That would be a goal in and of itself, to read all those.

I’ve been reading like crazy lately. Yesterday, I read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which made me laugh a lot. In the last week, I’ve also read Shannon Hale’s Book of a Thousand Days and Meg Cabot’s Princess Mia. Hale is always good, and Princess Mia reminded me of every little thing I love about the Princess Diaries series.

Ah, Adrienne, I surely loved Book of a Thousand Days. And I need to read the last two Princess Diaries–how’s I get so far behind? I love that series! What a nice treat for your last day of 2007. Very girly.

Haven’t finished anything but spent Christmas money on four books. I’ve started Lady Friday by Garth Nix and I’m still working on Twilight.

I had hoped to begin the year with Eclipse, but I’ll be getting it from the library and I have to wait in line, but I am next. I should have it by the 12th or so of this month, so I’m happy.
I’ll have to find something else to start the year off with!

I lifted a copy of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol from my inlaws over the holidays. It was a quick read–comfortably familiar but also pleasantly surprising, especially since the version I’ve seen the most these days is Mickey Mouse’s! That one’s slightly abridged and altered, to say the least. Dickens’s writing was actually quite fresh and funny, even though it was first published in 1843. Definitely a classic I enjoyed.

Happy New Year, Robin! Re-emerging from the stress-swamp that was this Christmas eager to sign up for anything you’re offering! I should know better, but 50 books in 2008 definitely shouldn’t be a problem, unless things go totally… (No, trying not to be so superstitious!)
Not a good sign that I had difficulty remembering what I was reading last week, but now I’ve got it: finished Click, which is a fund-raiser for Amnesty International - bunch of authors, one story. It was a good cause, anyway, and ’nuff said. Now I’m reading Philip Reeve’s Starcross - sequel to Larklight. It’s Victorian cyber-punk (or steam-punk? I never know how to use those terms correctly!) and a lot of fun. That guy can sure write well in wildly different styles.

Yep, Robin, I started on Eoin Colfer in the fourth grade.
Hooray for book fairs.
I’d suggest Artemis Fowl first - that’s what I started with, at any rate. I understand some people have trouble getting through the first chapter or two, and I remember that being the phase of “Ooookay. What is this?” but if you can make it to chapter three or four, you’ll probably like it.
I think a big part of enjoying Artemis Fowl is letting it be what it is. If that makes sense.
After the first one, they go Arctic Incident, Eternity Code, Opal Deception, and Lost Colony - so silver, blue, red, then lighter red with a demon reaching out of the cover.
And thus I once again manage to turn a simple recommendation into a speech. -bows-

Yes,American Shaolin is very good so far(I plan to interview the author later this month)and I finished The Winter Rose much sooner than expected(ha,ha,TV reruns!).
Oh,and I have to thank you,Robin,for that preview of The Host-I’ll be getting my own ARC of it soon! And yes,I will give Twilight a try-it’s on my Booksfree list as we speak.
