Twilight

It’s still Tuesday, so it’s still Tuesday Book Club, and I’ve just spent the entire day reading Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, and all I can say is

WHY DIDN’T ANY OF YOU TELL ME?????

ARE WE NOT FRIENDS? HAVE I NOT EXPLAINED TO YOU MY NEED FOR THE KIND OF ROMANTIC, THRILLING BOOKS THAT MAKE THE FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL INSIDE ME SWOON??

Not that Twilight is for fifteen-year-old girls only, but that’s a particularly potent part of my personality (wow, lots of “p”s) that responds extra forcibly to stories like Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights and now Twilight and of course New Moon and Eclipse, which I’ll have to get right away and do nothing but read straight through like I have these past two days, not pausing to buy or make food or write or sleep very much.

Anyway, I don’t mean to yell at you all, but please, in the future, do not hold back. I was really happy Kelly talked about Plain Janes today (and yes, Fuse, I remember you did, too, but the book was too far away back then, and maybe I just have to hear about things more than once), so now I know I have to buy that as soon as it comes out in May.

In other words, I need you to have my back on these things. If there’s really something I absolutely, positively MUST read, then please hit me over the head with a car jack until I get the message. Okay?

Thank you for your cooperation.

Woohoo! I own that book. I shall bump it up the “to read” list.

Books you must read… I personally think “Fair and Tender Ladies” by Lee Smith is a masterpiece. Especially if you like Southern lit.

  2. robin Says:

Okay, Katie, are you really willing to stand behind that recommendation? Because I am serious here–I only want the best. I can’t read everything, and I’m tired of not reading exactly what will make me happiest.

  3. Katie Alender Says:

Okay, I will say. It’s in my top five. Yes. I am prepared to say I stand behind it. Why does that make me so nervous??

  4. Heather Harper Says:

Twilight was the first book I read this year. I was so sick that I all I could do was stay in bed and read. I loved that book so much that I’m actually afraid to read New Moon. I’m not ready to know what happens next because I’m still living in the Twilight fantasy…

  5. Heather Harper Says:

(And I have not reported a new book read because I’m reading a really long book right now.)

  6. Lady T Says:

I haven’t read Twilight but have been hearing some good word of mouth on it and now with your recommendation,Robin, looks like I’ll have to check it out:)

  7. Vivian Says:

I was finally able to get a copy from the library. Thanks for the enthusiastic recommendation. And if you haven’t read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, you absolutely must. Incredible. Beautiful. Haunting.

  8. robin Says:

Thanks, Vivian. I’ll definitely do that. Been meaning to, but sometimes it takes that extra, direct statement: “Read this!” to get through to my brain.

  9. Jen Robinson Says:

I adored Twilight, Robin. I listened to it on MP3, and was utterly and totally compelled. I’m a sucker for the star-crossed lover story, if it’s well done. I felt when I read it that the dialog between Bella and Edward had echoes of Elizabeth and Darcy, and Stephenie Meyer later told me that this was intentional. So cool!

I must warn you that I didn’t like New Moon as much as Twilight, largely because Edward is absent for a big piece of the book. But I’m still eagerly awaiting the next book.

  10. robin Says:

Jen, I just bought New Moon today, and I’m fully prepared to love it and the next one and the next one.

That’s so cool about Elizabeth/Darcy. Love details like that.

  11. Nancy Says:

Robin, The Book Thief is great, but I have noticed that people who listened to it liked it much better than people who read it on paper.

And now I have to go get Twilight, because I am a love-to-swoon girl too.

  12. robin Says:

    Nancy, thanks for that tip.

And I’m so glad to hear you’re a Swoon Girl, too! I just started the second book in the series, New Moon, today, and already my heart is aching. In a good, girlish way.

  13. Little Willow Says:

Little Willow, you’re making me all nervous now. I’ve only read two on your list. Gulp. I have to stop blogging and go read IMMEDIATELY.
