Writing, reading, and other vital matters

Confess it: Are you a book licker?

I love this recent post by Meg Cabot. I’m sure MANY of us, both beginning and professional writers, can relate to it.

Confess it: Are you licking your manuscript to death even now?

  1. Patrick says:

Robin. We’ve moved on from our food addictions, haven’t we? It’s not ‘adding fiber’ to your diet.

Stopping licking books. And desks, too.

Do I need to list all the things you should not be licking?

  2. robin says:

Funny you should try to deflect attention back on me, when really I thought about writing, “Are you licking your manuscript, PATRICK???”

  3. tanita says:

WHY does she always know what I’m doing?!??

    Sigh.

One more day to lick, then I’m letting it go…

  4. Elizabeth says:

Oh. Dear. God. This is precisely why I’ve been writing the save first chapter. For three. Years. Three years!!! I just can’t let it go, can’t go on to chapter two until chapter one is perfect.

This is why I’m an unpublished librarian with a boxful of unfinished, unpublished manuscripts that I will never let anyone see. Thanks, Robin. I think I needed this catharsis.

  5. robin says:

Tanita, is it salty or is it sweet? Because my manuscripts are like tortilla chips. Just wondering.

Elizabeth, I have so been where you are–except add 5 years to your total. The only cure for me was to set that manuscript aside and just write a new one for fun as quickly as I could, just to prove that I had more than one book in me. It was the breakthrough I needed.

  6. tanita says:

My manuscripts are kind of like nachos. Salty. Tangy. Savory…

Sadly, their great deliciousness means in order to get them away from me, it requires a full-body, elbow-throwing, to-the-mat, shrieking and flailing intervention.

It went into the mail this morning. Done. Gone. Out of my hair ’til the revisions (please, God).

    Oy.

  7. robin says:

*snicker* (the sound, not the candy bar–although I know a lot of people’s manuscripts taste like that)

Thank you for your very evocative description, Tanita! You’ve made me crave your book!!
