An insider’s look at royalties
I’m on my way to San Francisco today to begin my book tour tomorrow, so I thought I’d send you over to my best writing pal Barry Lyga’s blog today, for an insider’s look at authors’ royalty statements. One of the things I’m enjoying so much about watching my writing career and Barry’s develop the way they have is that we finally get to learn all this cool behind-the-scenes stuff about the publishing business. Now it’s your turn.
See you in S.F.

BTW - A Massive Petfood recall is underway.

Seems to be mostly canned food.

Thanks, P Dawg (which I’ve decided to call you). I heard about that, but I appreciate the heads up, and I’m happy to pass it along. The wet foods on this list (canned and in pouches) have killed some pets–kidney failure. So definitely worth looking at the list if you have a pet.

What I found both interesting and disgusting about that list is that if you pay top dollar for Iams, Science Diet or Eukanuba you’re getting EXACTLY the same crappy diseased cat food as you would if you bought bargain brand America’s Choice (A&P house brand), Wegman’s house brand, Fine Feline (Aldi Discount Foods House brand), Lil Red (Agway house brand), Save a Lot house brand, or Winn Dixie house brand.
At least I’ve been paying bottom dollar for MY brand on the list, though luckily I didn’t ever buy the type that’s been recalled.
And the Briggster is now getting chicken and fish I cook for him.
Years ago you never heard of animals dying of cancer. Now it seems to be a normal occurence.

I know, BJ, I had that same thought. When we first got Bear as a puppy, his mother’s owner told us she secretly screened people by asking if they would feed the dog one of those cheapo brands on the list. Since we were all about premium dog foods, we passed that test. But now I see it’s the same manufacturer, just a different label. Doy.

I was clued in on this brand thing years ago by a guy whose name is Campbell (think Campbell’s Soup) who told me that well over half the canned soups on the shelves of all the stores in the US come out of Campbell’s factories no matter what label is on them. Why should dog or cat food be different? Or pasta, or window cleaner, or anything else? It’s the “economy of scale”. Maybe we pay less in some ways but in others we pay much more. Like the fuel to get the ingredients to the ONE factory that makes this stuff, and then the fuel to transport the finished goods from that ONE factory to everywhere else in the country (and sometimes the world.) And when things like this recall happen it has much bigger repercussions than if things were more localized and smaller scale.
That Fine Feline cat food I just threw out was made in Thailand. Think about how insane that is, from numerous perspectives.

Purina, Friskies…. that’s all I buy. Never had any problems with them…. dog gets dry, cat gets wet and dry. If it’s not labeled Purina or one of its subsidiaries, I don’t buy it. For one cat and one dog it doesn’t cost THAT much more.

Um, Vc? I live not far from one of the Purina processing plants. The rumors and stories that have come out of that place are enough to ensure that I never ever ever feed any animal Purina. There have been a few scandals locally about the processing plant being caught buying diseased (cancerous) meat. There was a time they were shut down for awhile. I’d rethink that if I were you.

Nope. I’ve got the world’s healthiest animals. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
