FAT CAT is coming tomorrow!

Can I just tell you that as an author, sometimes the publishing process takes SO LONG, you can’t believe it when a book has actually made it out and on to the shelves?

So let me celebrate with you the fact that FAT CAT will indeed be out and into the world starting tomorrow! Hurray!

And let me also celebrate this awesome review of it that just came out in Publisher’s Weekly:

Can an American teen survive 207 days without junk food and modern conveniences? Budding scientist Catherine (Cat) Locke finds out the answer after embarking on her most ambitious experiment yet: living the lifestyle of a primitive Homo erectus. Cat is determined to win a prize at the science fair and outshine her rival and former friend, Matt, “Mr. I’ve-Won-More Science-Fairs-Than-Any-of-You,” but that’s not her only motivation: she hopes that by following the diet of her ancestors, she’ll shed some unwanted pounds. Going without processed food, technology and motorized transportation isn’t easy (“A big fat Snickers and a slice of pizza would have made everything so much better”), but Cat learns much about herself and other members of the human species as she observes changes in her body and attitude, while noting how others react to her metamorphosis (namely, she’s suddenly juggling the attention of several boys). Well-versed in adolescent emotions and behaviors, Brande (Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature) offers a fresh, funny portrait of a strong-minded young woman hurdling obstacles and fighting cravings to reach her goal. Ages 12–up. (Oct.)

Thank you, Publisher’s Weekly!

So if you’ve a mind to, please pick up and enjoy a copy of FAT CAT some time this week. I’ll be interested in hearing what you all think of it. There’s a lot of personal history of mine that went into that book, so in a way it’s just one long blog post just waiting for your comments.

Thank you and ENJOY!

  1. Joanne Levy says:

YAY!!!! Happy (almost) release day, Robin!

  2. Sara says:

Woo-hoo, Robin!! I’m planning to get my copy at my indie store this weekend during the Kidlit Conference. Now if only you were going to be there to sign it and then go get coffee with me…

  3. Liz in Ink says:

My anti-spam word was WAVE, so I’m starting the wave in your honor, Robin. Yehaw — and can’t wait to see Fat Cat!!!

  4. Molly says:

We just got our copies at the library in today! Weeee! :)

  5. robin says:

Molly, that’s so cool! This may sound weird, but the fact that it arrived at your library actually makes the whole thing feel more real to me than knowing it will be in stores. Thanks for telling me!

Thank you, Joanne! Nice to celebrate with my only Canadian friend!

Sara, you gave me a little pang in my heart with that reference! Sorry I won’t be able to hang out with you and the gang at the Kidlit Conference. I know you’re going to have such a great time. Next year, please? (And P.S. Your book (that would be “Operation Yes,” for those looking on) is in the basket by my bed, waiting for me to finish the science book I’m reading now for research. Your book will be my treat! I can’t wait!)

Liz, thank you for the starting the wave. I just stood up and sat back down, so I hope it was my turn. Thanks for sharing in my fun!

  6. Shannon says:

I already pre-ordered my copy last week. It hasn’t shipped yet so it looks like I won’t have it till the end of the week. *sighs*

I hate ordering books but I had no choice. I live in suburbia and am thus at the mercy of one horribly stocked Barnes and Noble. I had hoped it would ship early (my Goth Girl Rising and ArchEnemy did) but alas. So now I must learn to exercise patience…

  7. Kelley says:

Fantastic review and a fantastic day for one of my favorite authors! How special it is to “know” you through this blog and emails and get the privilege of reading your creations. I am definitely not going to be able to wait for Katie Sis to finish the AUTOGRAPHED copy she won. I’ll have to buy one for myself! Congrats!!!

  8. Elizabeth says:

Robin, Happy Release Day! Fat Cat is in the library, and I’m going to go snag my personal copy at Borders tonight!! Now if only I could get to AZ and have you sign it…

  9. robin says:

Shannon, I, too, am into instant gratification when it comes to my books, so I hear ya on the having to wait. But go ahead and read my buddy Barry Lyga’s book Goth Girl Rising while you wait–what an excellent use of your time!

Thank you, Kelley–that’s so nice!! I’m mailing your sister’s book today (t-shirts for all the winners will have to follow–see above comment re instant gratification when it comes to books). Maybe she’ll read quickly and pass it on to you!

Elizabeth, I’m so excited it’s in your library! Seriously, having spent so much of my childhood in the neighborhood library, there’s something so . . . real about having my own books be in someone’s library, just waiting to be checked out by some other reading junky.

And hang on to the copy you buy. You never know when you’ll run into me again, and then I’ll be happy to sign it!

  10. Elizabeth says:

You should TOTALLY come to Michigan again. I’ve been playing with vegan recipes again, and I need a tester.

  11. adrienne says:

    My copy’s on order!

  12. robin says:

Elizabeth, you KNOW I’m always up for that!

Adrienne, I want you to know that a blog post of yours about a year ago had a big influence on me while I was writing FAT CAT. You wrote some review comparing the food described in one book vs. the food described in another, and you said how much you preferred the delicious-sounding food in whichever one that was.

So I deliberately started putting more delicious food into FAT CAT. See? You just never know how what you say in a blog might influence someone’s novel. So thank you!!!

  13. adrienne says:

Oh, see now, that’s brilliant. I evaluate almost all things based on the quality of the food, and I remember most major events by what I was eating.
