Writing, reading, and other vital matters

Finished!!! Yee-HAW!!

Friends, bloggers, countrymen–I JUST FINISHED! I just, thirty seconds ago, sent my revised manuscript for the new book to my editor!! Now excuse me while I go watch 800 hours of accumulated recorded TV programs!

Just kidding.

But not really.

I have SO much to catch up on. Books to read, magazines and newspapers to plow through, real meals to eat, movies to see, e-mails to answer, hands to shake, babies to kiss–wait, am I still running for President? It’s been so long I lost track.

I am not an animal! I am a human being! (Name that film.)

Anyway, I can’t tell you how tired I am, both mentally and physically, but also how absolutely thrilled I am about the new book. I love it so much I can’t even tell you. I hope all of you will feel the same way someday when you hold it in your hands. And remember, even if it only takes you a day or two to read, it took me MUCH longer to write. I always marvel at that when I read someone else’s book: Someone actually had to write every single one of those words. Wow.

I’m taking the night off now. That’ll be a first. Taking a nice loooooong break now, too.

What year is it anyway?

  6. Jen Robinson says:

    Congratulations, and welcome back, Robin!

  7. Congratulations! But I do hope that your first order of business is to get some rest. Then you can go about catching up with everything else.

  8. Vivian says:

Wahoo! Get some rest and come back soon to play! Congratulations!

  9. Ruby Diamond says:

    Congratulations!!!

  10. Yay!!! Time for you to destress! And if it makes you feel any better, I’ve already forgotten about you throwing chili on my Pat Is Cool Tee. ;)

  11. Congratulations, Robin!

  12. Barry says:

    Good feeling, eh?

  13. Kelley says:

I’ve been waiting a while for this post, and I know you’ve been waiting a while to write it! Congrats on finishing perhaps the most difficult leg of this journey. I can’t wait to read the end result! And, while I’ve not been published and haven’t even finished a respectable manuscript, I can certainly sympathize with how incredibly HARD it is to write a book. And ironically, it seems that the quicker someone can read it, likely the better (and more carefully) it has been written, and possibly the longer it has taken to create.

  14. Katie Sis says:

Yahey! You’re finished!! Congratulations, I can’t wait to read it! I just finished reading Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. It was very good. I’m looking forward to more blog exchanges!

  15. Elizabeth says:

Congrats and welcome back! We missed you soooooo much!!

  16. robin says:

Aw, you guys, you make me so happy! Thanks for all the welcoming comments–love them!

Sorry I’ve been so slow to respond. Turns out I wasn’t as off-duty as I thought. Spent the morning trying to write a synopsis of the book, and for those of you who have had to do that, you know that condensing 300-odd pages into a 2-page description is torture. I feel like I start out saying, “And then this happened, and then this, and then her friend said this–” It takes a while to be all professional and distant from the work, and just explain the highlights. “But that one scene is so cute! Can’t I just explain it?” No. Settle down.

Anyway, now can my vacation start?

Think I’ll go try on a nap.

And thanks again for all your hellos! Hello back!

  17. Patrick says:

    Robin,

You look taller. Has a giant weight been lifted from your shoulders?

  18. robin says:

Taller and skinnier. Because it’s like I just passed a huge stone.

    TMI?

  19. Patrick says:

I haven’t heard of the huge stone diet before. It sounds effective!

  20. Shai says:

WAH HOO! I can’t wait to read it. We have been talking about our past lives…hmm..I wonder.
So now that you are done, can you watch the last Pirate of Caribbean..lol! I still have a stash of popcorn and some good wine waiting for you! :)

  21. Dylan says:

Woo! Welcome back! I’m so glad you’ve finished it! I just know it will be terrific! ^^ I can’t wait to read it!

Make sure you get lots of rest before catching up on thing or you might get overwelmed with it all and that wont be stress reducing! :( Just take it slow and enjoy your break!

    *hugs*

  22. Lady T says:

Hey,good to have you back,Robin! If you’re looking for a great new read,The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski is tailor made for you.

It’s a brilliant first novel that mixes The Jungle Book,Hamlet and touches of Watership Down with original twists and the flair of old fashioned writing. Plus, one of the major characters in this book is a dog named Almondine(if that doesn’t get you into reading this, then nothing will).

  23. Carli says:

congrats, can’t wait to read your book

  24. bj says:

WOOHOO! We missed ya! I, for one, am very happy you’re back. Well, whenever you actually ARE back. You do deserve a keyboard break, and some downtime. Maybe a good hike up a mountain somewhere? The Appalachian Trail in New England is gorgeous this time of year . . .

  25. Sara says:

I hear you, sister. Woo-hoo for sunlight and emerging from the cave! And for loving that novel into existence.

    I’ve missed your voice.

  26. Jessica Stewart says:

    congrats!!!!!!
cant wait till it comes out on the shelves! my suggestion for relaxing are baths!! tons and tons of baths just sitting in there reading or eating chocolate always helps me to relax on my breaks ^^

  27. Patrick says:

Funny you should say that BJ, that’s exactly what I did last weekend – hiked part of the Appalachian trail in New Hampshire.

  28. robin says:

Thanks for the suggestion, Jessica! Sounds lovely.

Sara, hope you enjoyed your blogvation. Congrats on 1 year!

Thanks, BJ–a hike sounds wonderful. I’m going backpacking next month! Whee!!

Lady T, I’ve been noticing the reviews for that–can’t wait to read it! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks, Carli and Dylan! I’m writing these books for an audience like you!

And Shai, that sounds mighty tempting!

  29. jules says:

I absolutely marvel at how much time and energy it must take to write a novel, and I think of this often, even when I zip through a book.

    Congratulations!

  30. robin says:

    Thanks, Jules and Little Willow!

And Jules, I definitely have that thought when I’m reading a Harry Potter book–how did she think up all those words?
