Personal M&Ms

Even though I did break my full-on addiction to chocolate last year, there are definitely times when chocolate is required. Like now–deadlines, first book coming out in just a few days, perhaps some hormonal issues you gents don’t need to know about–and rather than keep chocolate in the house we’ve been maintaining a practice this week of going out after dinner every night so I can get frozen yogurt with Reese’s peanut butter cups on top. HEAVEN.

But no need for that last night, because around 2:00 the UPS man rang the doorbell, and I assumed he was finally bringing me a big box of my own books, straight from the Random House warehouse, but no, it was even better!

A huge box of my very own, personalized, pink and white M& Ms (to match my book cover)! In beautiful little white fabric bags, like you’d see as party favors at a wedding. And the M&Ms have written on them in tiny little letters, “Kudos to Robin” and other sweet slogans.

THANK YOU!!! You know who you are, person who sent those, and I adore you for it.

Such timely chocolate, and such kindness to boot.

What’s your favorite surprise food gift?

Oh, what a wonderful gift, Robin!! Keep on writing. Now that I’ve read your first book, I expect only great things from you ;)

  2. robin Says:

    Aack! No pressure!

What I mean is, thank you, Kelly!!

  3. Alkelda Says:

Congratulations, Robin! Good chocolate is always a nice food surprise gift (and you’ve certainly delivered on that front). My favorite food surprise gift was one I got a goodly number of years ago, when a patron delivered a box of large, fresh, delicious peaches. Each library staff member got one. I’d had a long, arduous summer, and that peach was pure grace.

  4. robin Says:

Alkelda, that sounds so wonderful. “Pure grace” is right.

  5. annette Says:

what a sweet treat. i would have sent it to you if i was the kind of person to think of such a nice, personal gesture.

my yummiest surprise was similar to the gleeful one’s–a box of harry and david pears. each wrapped in a little red tissue. so, so luscious, eaten over the kitchen sink to catch all the juice pouring off my chin–they spoil you for life.

  6. robin Says:

Annette, you know very well you got your own personal blog post last fall for doing this incredible thing. Kindness comes in many forms.

  7. Patrick, the Space Lord Says:

Mental note: Do not wear Dockers and Tulane T-shirt to book signing…

  8. robin Says:

I know, Patrick. Aren’t you glad I linked to that previous post? You would have been so embarrassed.

  9. Patrick, the Space Lord Says:

“embarrassed” — I’m not sure what that word means.

If I had worn that, it wouldn’t change that my fashion sense is fabulous, only that annette does not understand. The mental note is for meeting expectations. I like to induldge people.

  10. Sara Says:

Oh, this is so sweet! But how can you bear to eat them? I guess if you’ve taken enough pictures, first…

Once, a friend let herself into my house during a time when I was grieving, and left pints and pints of ice cream in the freezer.

  11. robin Says:

Sorry, P. I forgot whom I was talking to.

Sara, what a wonderful friend! I bet that caused a boatload of tears, as if you weren’t crying already.

  12. adrienne Says:

My BFF Tammy brings me a latte along with her child — who she does, after all, expect me to take care of for a couple hours — around 7:00 every morning. That’s a pretty good deal, although come to think of it, it may be more of a bribe than a gift.

I hope the writing’s going well, Robin. :) The book launch is going to be great, I know. You wrote an excellent book, the kind *my* teenage self would have loved to read.

  13. robin Says:

Thank you, Adrienne! What a sweet thing to say!

And I love that your friend understands the proper use of lattes. You’re nice to take care of her child for such a reasonable bribe.

    CHOCOLATES FROM ROBIN!

Or when my mother-in-law visits and brings me a mocha.

Robin, I have your book, and I secured a review copy for Eisha, ’cause we’re gonna read it together and CO-REVIEW (i.e. run our mouths about your book). Can’t wait!

  15. jules Says:

And congrats on the release date (is what I really meant to say).

  16. robin Says:

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPP!!!!!

  17. Miri Says:

Aw, how sweet! That really is the perfect gift.

Congrats on your release date being so SOON! I’ll fulling be buying the book as soon as I possibly can, and pimping it to everyone I know. I’m quite good at that.

  18. Vivian Says:

What an awesome creative gift. Enjoy your book launch. Congrats!

  19. Vivian Says:

What an awesome creative gift! Here’s to a great book launch and many books sold!

  20. Michelle Says:

The best food gift I have received was a heavenly brownie from a delightful, thoughtful person who cleverly figured out how to send chocolate that won’t melt in the summer heat.

Those m & ms are amazing. And well deserved!

  21. Little Willow Says:

    How sweet. No pun intended.

  22. robin Says:

Thanks y’all. Just remember to gift some personalized M&Ms yourselves some day–it does make a person happy.
