Professional jealousy among writers and other creatures

Whoo, this one’s a doozy. This week’s installment of Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Freelancer’s Survival Guide deals with professional jealousy, and it’s one of those things you don’t really want to look at straight on, but she’s forcing us to. Lots to consider in there. Take your time and see if it’s true for you.

Just one of the many gems: For those who disdain writers on the bestseller list, but who claim to want to be on that list themselves–anyone see the disconnect? Rather than tear down the authors who are commercial successes and claim what they’re writing is “crap,” how about this approach instead:

“Asking what successful people are doing right, asking not the successful person, but their fans or readers or clients, is the best way you can understand what’s working.”

Then consider working toward some success yourself. Rather than just criticizing other people who already have it.

Read and enjoy!
