Taking some time off–to write, of all things
Hey there, all my blog friends. The time has come for me to write a new book–and it’s going to be a long one. And much as I love checking in with you here and there, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays, I realize I need all of my writing and thinking muscles to go into the new book.
So even though I know I’m going to miss you, the fact is I need to disappear for a while. I’ll come play with you on your blogs, but for now I need to go underground and concentrate on a story I can’t wait to tell.
Hope you all understand. I’ll be back when my work is done!

Of course Robin, do what you gotta do!
You will always rock my world!
Two second hug..hee hee
March 13th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Thank you, Shai! Two-second hug back!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Good luck with the writing! Can’t wait to hear all about it.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Well, great. Just as I had gotten your site cleared as “not porn” here at work. I was going to be by every Friday, but noooooo. You have to write a book. Like that’s so hard.
Kidding. Good writing vibes going out to you.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Good luck on your new book! I’ll miss your blog, but can’t wait to read your next book. I’ll still check your blog every once in a while!
By the way, I know this is totally random, but one orthodontist’s assistant looks just like you!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Oh, you will be missed, Robin! But the story you can’t wait to tell comes first. Happy writing!
March 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Good luck, Robin! See you in a few months. Literally.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Is dis tree or fou’?
March 13th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Felicity! SHHHHH! You’ll ruin her secret disguise!
March 13th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Thank you, Vivian. I look forward to reading the book you’re working on, too!
Mother Reader, can you believe the timing? So sorry to put you to the trouble of un-porning me.
Felicity, I don’t know what to say about the orthodontist’s assistant. Does that mean I have the power to scare people with crooked teeth? Sweet.
Lady S., it’s hard to be disciplined sometimes, but it’s true–the story does have to come first.
Thanks, Heather! And when we meet you’ll be able to tell me if I look like an orthodontist’s assistant for real.
Patrick, am I supposed to understand that?
March 13th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Are you working on book 3 or 4 or 17? I’m getting lost here.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Oh. Four. While I wait for edits on three.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Aw, bummer! Just make sure you come back sometime, okay? And good luck with big book #4!!
March 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
A new book! How fun!
Pam, I also had to get Robin un-porned at my library. There’s nothing like sitting at the Reference Desk just a-going about your business when suddenly the screen goes white and that lovely message that says, “YOU CAN’T LOOK AT THAT PORN YOU PERVERT” (or whatever it says–I turned off the browser right quick, I was so horrified). I don’t know what gets into the computers sometimes.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Especially since everyone knows what a prude I am. It’s just not right.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Into the cave again, is it? That’s what I like about you, Robin—you never do anything by halves.
Write well, brave cavewomanwriter!
March 13th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Sara, you wouldn’t say that if you knew I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday. Apparently my sugar-free thing is nothing but halves. But thanks for the sweet comment anyway!
March 13th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Good luck Robin!
March 13th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
I don’t care how long it takes you as long as you keep writing.
But i will miss you.
March 13th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Your homemade chocolate chip cookies almost certainly have less sugar than ones you would buy in the store, Robin. That’s something. I try to limit most of my sweet-eating to things I make or, if I buy something, it has to be hand-made by someone else. That way, I either have to put forth some effort or fork over a fair amount of money/support a local businessperson. This is what I like to call “healthy rationalization.”
March 13th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Thank you, Dylan!
Thank you, Carli!
Bless you indeed, Adrienne. I appreciate that kind of rationalization.

We’ll miss you lots. I admire your discipline to put distractions aside and tell that story. I’m also incredibly excited that you are continuing to turn out books so quickly after your first publication. Maybe one day, I’ll be able to follow some of your good advice about writing, agents, money, and such. Thanks for all the time you’ve devoted to us! Hopefully we’ll see you back here soon…but not until you’ve written MANY pages. (:
March 14th, 2008 at 7:58 am
We’ll miss you,Robin, but we know it’s important to keep your nose to the grindstone sometimes(just not too close or it could fall off). Since my anti-spam word is hugs,I’m sending one to you:D
March 14th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Sad to see you go, but excited to know you’re writing! Well, writing a book, that is.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Of course I want you to write a new book, Robin. I can’t help but hope you’ll find a way to write it AND blog, though.:)
March 14th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
P.S. You at least need to rant and rave about Lost, right? I just watched it. WAH.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Kelley, believe me, it’s not so easy to put aside the distractions–they’re so much fun to play with! But my books won’t just write themselves, I’ve discovered, and so I actually have to sit and concentrate and stop chasing after all the other fun, shiny things out there (including all my blog pals–did you know you all were fun, shiny things?). But thanks for your well-wishes–I appreciate that!
Lady T, thanks for the support and the hugs! The grindstone is my friend right now.
Bill, thanks. And you’re right, this is writing, too, and sometimes I’m guilty of letting it take up too much of my time, even when I’m limiting myself to only a few days a week. Must. Work!
Thanks, Alkelda. And I’ve thought about missing out on talking about Lost, too! Wah is right! Especially since it’s such a great season! Must. Focus.
Thanks, truly, to all of you for understanding and supporting my decision. I believe the time spent away from here will be worth it!
March 15th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I admire your resolve to get writing done…wish I could do as well…
Good luck and happy writing.
March 16th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Thanks, Judy. I’m serious: you guys have no idea how good it makes me feel to have such support from all of you!
March 16th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Best wishes with the book, Robin. May the story come to you readily and engagingly.
March 17th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Robin,
I hope you complete the book in record time. I know only too well how addictive blogging can be–and how much time it diverts from one’s writing…and cleaning…and attending to lists of things to do…and…
March 17th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Honey, If you’re giving up bloggin’ you HAVE to have sugar. I mean, get real. May your re-treat serve you (and your adoring public) well. Can’t wait for the next book(s)… and in the meantime, we’ll miss you…
March 17th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
May the story come to you readily and engagingly. Little Willow, that’s a lovely thing to say. That’s my wish, too!
Elaine, you’re so right about the addictive properties of blogging. We love it, but let’s all admit to its time-sucking properties. I’ll miss the play, but I’ll value the time regained.
And Liz, you are such a pal for saying that! I didn’t realize sugar and blogging were connected that way. I gladly accept your permission to give up only one at a time. (Although I’m still working on keeping the sugar at a minimum. Because it really does help my brain and creativity not to be so stoned on chocolate and other delicacies.)
Thanks, y’all!
March 18th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Let’s see - Friday I got a massage in the PHL airport and last week I read another re-read of a David Eddings book.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Here I am offering my belated support. Write on Robin!
March 18th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Great that you are writing another book and have to disappear but aren’t you forgetting something? What about your LOST comments? Oh, wait a minute!! You timed your writing at the almost end of LOST season, tricky!! OK, go write but if you read or hear anything about our characters, please make an emergency entry in your blog.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
i cant wait for your new books and me and my dad loved the comment above when you said “So sorry to put you to the trouble of un-porning me.” my dad cracked up laughing. cant wait to see your #3 and #4
March 19th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Patrick, feel free to host the Tuesday Book Club and the Friday List on your blog in my absence for a while. Obviously you’re missing those.
Katie Sis, thanks!
MJG, believe me, I thought about whether I’d be able to give up talking about Lost. I have to be strong. But yes, it will help that it’s going on hiatus for a month to catch up with the writers’ strike. Whew. And maybe I will make emergency Lost postings if there’s something just too juicy to ignore.
Jessica, thanks for the chuckle. I already forgot about that un-porn discussion. Thanks for looking forward to the next books!
March 20th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I’m just checking to see if you’ve caved yet. Darn! You’re still going strong. I mean, hurrah! You’re still going strong…
March 21st, 2008 at 5:42 am
Alkelda - Robin would never give in to temptation!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:25 am
Don’t be mean to me, Patrick. You know I do my best. (I’m sticking my tongue out at you right now.) (Maybe I should learn to use emotocons.) (Or whatever.)
Alkelda, thank you for checking in! Your comment made me realize I need to do what I’m about to do. Check back in five minutes . . .
March 21st, 2008 at 8:35 am
I wasn’t being supportive?
I didn’t start a pool on when you would cave or anything this time.
