The 24/7 job

Thought you guys would like to read this bit of wisdom/insight from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. It’s amazing to remember that this isn’t just an issue for us beginning/newly-published writers. Apparently it goes on and on.

I’ve always appreciated Tess Gerritsen’s honesty–not every author at her level would dare to admit her insecurities. And maybe you don’t feel this way, but I find her troubles strangely comforting. Every time she posts something about obsessing over her sales or getting depressed about a review or worrying about whether she’ll be able to pull off whatever novel she’s currently working on, I feel better about my own worries and obsessions (mainly because they’re usually on the same topics). Somehow knowing that the pros have a lot of the same issues as I do makes me feel better about the whole journey–like we’re all in this together, just doing our best to write our stories and get them out there in the world, and no one has it any more figured out than the next guy.

Do you find that comforting, or discouraging?

O that is rather encouraging! I’ve been feeling out of sorts with my writing too! I find my self saying “Why should I do this job I’m awful at it.” and “what have I gotten my self into…” and “I have no idea what is supposed to happen next in my plot!” Charicter doubts, plot doubts, self doubt! O_O oh my! lol not good…
