The fifty pounds Meg Cabot & I have in common

Wow, you never know what you’re going to find out about an author–especially one you admire as much as I do Meg Cabot. Those of you who have followed this blog long enough know that I’m a huge fan of both her books and her blog.

And now, in one of those strange loop-de-loops, I get to be on her blog today. Well, me and FAT CAT, that is.

I had no idea Meg and I both used to carry around a good old extra fifty pounds, earned honestly through raw cookie dough (in her case) and Baskin Robbins ice cream (in mine–always a pint in one sitting, thank you very much). In fact, I believe I topped out at way more than the extra fifty, but let’s not be competitive.

If y’all knew how giddy and girly I’m feeling right now to have one of my books featured on one of my favorite writers’ blogs–well, let’s just say it’s good that this is the printed word, not video conferencing. A person should be allowed to keep her dignity.

THANK YOU, MEG!! You are, as I’ve known for years, the incarnation of awesome.

And if any of you want to win a free signed copy of FAT CAT (but wait, there’s more!) AND one of the Karmic Cafe t-shirts from the book, head over to Meg’s message board and answer the contest questions!

  1. Steph Su says:

Robin, I read the interview. Meg Cabot never fails when she features a book on her website, and FAT CAT totally deserves it. Yay for you!

  2. robin says:

Thank you, Steph! That’s so nice. And seriously, as if I didn’t love and adore Meg Cabot enough before–this oughta do it!

  3. Patrick says:

Where are these T-shirts coming from? Is there a link somewhere on your website?

  4. robin says:

Oh, great, Patrick–you’re totally exposing my lack of getting through a very old to-do list.

The Karmic Cafe t-shirts are mine. I had them made. One of the things I keep meaning to do is have a link on my website so people can buy them if they want.

But I keep on writing this book instead. But honestly, when it’s finished, I’ll catch up with everything else!

    Why, would you want one?

  5. Diana says:

Hi, Robin. I’m a regular reader of Meg’s blog and books, and Fat Cat sounds very interesting. I look forward to checking it out. :)

  6. robin says:

Great, Diana! And yes, don’t we just love Meg’s work to death? I’m with you!

  7. Your word verification just called me a broad. That wasn’t very polite. ;)

I would love to see the shirts, so hurry up and write!

  8. Oh, and congrats on the MEG blog spot. You must have lost a lot of sleep from giddy exhaustion over that one!

  9. Patrick says:

    Wouldn’t I look good in a Karmic Cafe T-shirt?

Oh, wait, I always look good, so, Yes!

  10. Elizabeth says:

Robin, as always, thank you for being so honest and open in this interview and for writing such strong, beautiful women into your books. I look forward to the day that I can wear my Karmic Cafe t-shirt with pride…but I’m willing to wait for my Karmic Cafe t-shirt as long as it means I’ll have another book to put on the Robin Shelf in my study. And someday, when you’re not busy writing, I would like the double-espresso brownie recipe.

But pretty please finish your book first.

  11. robin says:

(Heather, I’m “broad,” too. So rude.)

Heather and Elizabeth, thank you for being so sweet and tolerant of my lack of follow-through! Wow, I need to have you two in my head instead of the mean girl who’s always saying, “And you need to do this, and this, and this–come on, lazy!”

Or maybe that’s Patrick’s voice. Not sure.

I’m in the home stretch on the new book, PARALLELOGRAM. Just hold on everybody!

  12. Katie says:

So, I’ve never read any or your books here, but I’ve been a devoted Meg Cabot fan since I was 13 (I’m 20 now), and I take her suggestions very seriously, so I’m totally spending some of my pay check this week on Fat Cat, because it looks awesome and I think you’re cool.

  13. robin says:

Wow, thank you, Katie! How nice is that?!

  14. Patrick says:

I like Katie. She can come back anytime.

  15. robin says:

    I know. Katie’s fun!

  16. Katie says:

Thanks! I’ll gladly come back! People are nice here. And I like reading what nice people read.

  17. Elizabeth says:

Welcome to the dark side, Katie. Have a slice of chocolate zucchini bread.

  18. adrienne says:

I would be swooning if I were you.

  19. robin says:

Ooh, Elizabeth, I love that as an introductory membership plan! Katie, go here, please: http://robinbrande.com/index.php?s=chocolate+zucchini+bread

Adrienne, you know how completely uncool I am, so yes, swooning and a lot more.

  20. Patrick says:

I would think that you all have gotten used to me hanging out and not swoon so much.

  21. robin says:

Just when people think they’re over you, they see your perfect hair again, and forget it–they’re gone. You must get so tired of that, P.

  22. Liz in Ink says:

Catching up on blog reading and oh, my, this synergy is FINE! Some might even say “Karmic”…

  23. robin says:

Thanks, Liz. Or should I say, thanks NYT BESTSELLER and CALDECOTT HONOR winner Liz Garton Scanlon? WOOT!!!!! I’m going to always call you that. It might take a while to introduce you to people.

  24. Juli says:

Hi! I’d never really heard of you (sorry) until I read Meg’s blog post. I actually happened upon her blog through Sarah Dessen’s blog (I never realized all my favorite authors had blogs, it’s really entertaining). I picked up both of your books for plane/beach reading over my spring break, and they were both amazing! I am now officially a huge fan, so please write more soon! I even started cutting some things out of my diet, just like Cat does. Your books are both really relateable, and I’m not even a teen anymore (I’m 22). What is your next book about?

  25. robin says:

Hi, Juli. Thanks for writing to me! I love to get comments like this.

I’m so glad you enjoyed my books! I happen to be writing the last two chapters of my new one right now! This minute! (Except for answering you here, which works well, because I’m sort of stuck on what I want to say. So I’m taking this break, and then I’ll go back and finish, I promise.)

The new one is about a girl who uses quantum physics and string theory to penetrate a parallel universe and meet a very different version of herself. Very tricky stuff, let me tell you.

Okay, break’s over. Off to finish. But thanks for your sweet note!
