The Friday list (nice things you did for yourself this week)

Here’s what I did this week, and it was extra fun.

I went to Tempe, Arizona yesterday to talk to Changing Hands Bookstore–this year’s Publishers Weekly Bookseller of the Year–to discuss the book launch party they’re going to be throwing for me! YAY!!!

So save the date: Tuesday, August 28, 2007. If you’re anywhere near Phoenix, and you’re feeling the need for some dry heat–SO much better than that clammy, humid, soul-sucking heat some of you people in the East have to deal with–then please consider coming to Tempe (a suburb of Phoenix) that evening to enjoy some chocolate and some laughs with some of the celebrities you’ve come to know and love from this very blog.

Also this week, I read and read and read. I forgot how truly wonderful it is to sit for hours at a time, completely absorbed in a book. I found I really do have the time. Der.

Enough about me. What nice things did you guys do for yourselves this week?

    Well, let’s see.

Stayed up until 4:00am reading a book.

Remembered to workout while at the hotel.

Played some blackjack- Of course I won.

  2. robin Says:

P, that workout thing is a big deal. I know how hard that is. Good work, Cape Boy!

  3. Deborah Says:

Still having trouble accessing site, but was able to this morning. It almost felt like it was too busy a week to have time or energy to do anything I would really consider nice, but I feel good about getting my house even more packed and I am actually having a moving sale tomorrow (I don’t know how NICE this will be, but I will feel good cleaning out the house!). Oh, and I am on my way to ride my horse which I haven’t done in weeks-that IS nice!

  4. robin Says:

Yay, Deborah! And I’m so glad you were able to get back on the site. Has anyone else been having trouble getting on here this week? (Of course, the people who are can’t even read this or answer, so I guess I might not ever know.)

  5. Lizzie Says:

I went to a TV on the Radio concert. That’s about it - this week was lame.

p.s. Robin, you were in my dream last night.

  6. robin Says:

Was I a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?

  7. annette Says:

    i had a mole removed.

  8. Patrick Says:

I’ve seen the site bounce once or twice. I am assuming that BJ has this exporting completely to your own site rather than hosting on the Wordpress servers and having your domain redirect. So, I might have caught an update or two.

I know she recently changed your host provider. Every once in a while I see their server welcome screens - apache server stuff was what it used to be, I don’t remember what the latest was. But I did see a glitch or two after she switched providers.

I’m just guessing though. I don’t think about it too much. I just wait 2.41 minutes and then retry. Next time I’ll grab a few screen shots.

  9. robin Says:

    Thanks for the info, Patrick.

Annette, that sounds . . . fun. But I’m sure that was something nice to do for yourself, healthwise. Hope you treated yourself to ice cream afterward.

  10. Diana Says:

    I made meatballs.

And I got myself a video game elephant.

  11. robin Says:

Mm, meatballs. There’s some comfort food. And I saw your elephant on your blog. Sweet!

  12. Katie Alender Says:

We had gourmet grilled cheese last night; I am working from home today; I started and finished a very good book (”The Secret Life of Bees”), and Winston is choosing to sleep in on a rainy day, which means the inevitable toweling-off-of-the-filthy-dog has been postponed.

I think the universe is coming back into alignment.

  13. Laura Fitzgerald Says:

I penciled in AUGUST 28 - ROBIN’S BOOK RELEASE PARTY on my calendar. I will be there!

  14. Sara Says:

I just got back from yoga class with my favorite teacher. What I love about her is that I can completely put myself in her hands and know that I will emerge rested and revived. We did Wheel at the end and it released all kinds of stuff I didn’t even know was there. Plus, she gave us a moment at the end to focus on restoration, both for ourselves and others, after the horrible events of this week.

  15. robin Says:

Katie, I loved Secret Life of Bees SO much. What a nice treat for yourself–but I especially love the gourmet grilled cheese. Again with the comfort food.

    Laura, really? YAY!

Sara, I had the same experience at yoga on Wednesday. Something about the stillness, the slow movement, the time to let your brain unwind–really necessary in times of extreme.

  16. Patrick Says:

I just bought books today! Yippee more books.

  17. robin Says:

Good. I’ll expect your report on Tuesday.

  18. Heather Harper Says:

I ate a 7 layer dip crunch wrap from Taco Bell. It was yummy.

  19. robin Says:

Apparently this week’s theme is Comfort Food.

  20. Patrick Says:

I had a porkchop and some broccoli for lunch today.

  21. Diana Says:

I bought myself sushi for lunch today. Mmmm… sushi.

  22. robin Says:

Can’t go with you there, Diana, but I’m happy you’re happy.

  23. Nancy Says:

I had a wonderful phone call with someone I’m just getting to know.

I allowed myself to be my best self.

On a similar note, I recognized a situation where I felt like I wasn’t able to be my best self, and I walked away from it.

  24. robin Says:

Whoa, Nancy, those last two are WAY advanced. I want to be like you!

  25. Nancy Says:

Well I’m glad I didn’t go with the comfort food theme, Robin. Right after I posted, I went to the fridge to get my barbeque pulled pork out for dinner, and realized that I threw it in the trash as I was running out the door this morning.

    oops…

I think this calls for chocolate.

  26. Vivian Says:

I seriously can’t wait for your book to come out. I’m hearing great things about it!

Love sushi and had some Thursday. A rare treat. Finally broke through a problem in my book and wrote 3 chapters!!! Went to the library and a few books I had on reserve were ready for me. I had a wonderful talk with my sister. I went to bed early 2 nights in a row and caught up on some much needed sleep.

  27. Sara Says:

Obviously, I missed the memo about this week’s food theme. For the record, I’m eating Good and Plenty right now. And plotting how I can stay in LA for three more weeks after the SCBWI conference in August so I can return through Phoenix on the 28th. Anybody want me to be a writer in residence for three weeks? :)

  28. robin Says:

Vivian, I SO need your last thing there–going to bed early and catching up on my sleep. I am going to do that tonight, just because you said so.

Sara, you’re so sweet! But even though I want one and all to come to the party, I feel strange about asking any human person to be in Phoenix at that time of year. So if you can’t swing that, maybe you’ll be in one of the cities I end up in over the coming year.

  29. Sara Says:

I used to live in New Mexico, so I know about the heat. I like the T-shirt they sell of two skeletons reclined in lawn chairs, with the dialogue: “Yeah, but it’s a DRY heat…”

  30. Jen Robinson Says:

I went clothes shopping yesterday. It’s not really something that I enjoy, but I really needed something new for an upcoming business trip. I ended up finding several things that I liked, and that fit, and since this is rare for me, I bought them all. Now it feels pretty good to have them to pack up for the trip.

Sadly, I haven’t been getting any reading done. But I have some great stuff earmarked to take on my trip.

  31. robin Says:

I’m with you, Jen–shopping can be either torture or delight. But it’s so nice when you find clothes that actually fit and that you think are pretty. Good job buying them all, since now that exempts you from shopping for many more months.

  32. bj Says:

I missed “niceness” on Friday, but made up for it yesterday, by spending the day on the Mainline at a coffee shop meeting with my GeekGroup (http://refreshdelval.org), and had a nice surprise on the way down. Decided to backroad it and a Church Group out in East Jibippy was having a FREE car wash! What a wonderful serendipitous (and very necessary) moment! And the church group sure got a workout on my car.

Last week at the Climate Change Rally I ran into someone I had met briefly once before, and we talked. This week I dropped her an email and invited her out for a cuppa joe today. She accepted. She lives here in town, and I don’t have many friends close by, so it’ll be really great if this turns into a friendship. So that was something nice I did for myself. We’re planning on taking a good walk after coffee, something I really need, and the weather couldn’t be better for it.

  33. Little Willow Says:

Do quasimergencies count? I went to the dentist on Wednesday due to swelling and pain. I have to go back at least three more times within the next four weeks.

    Dear April,

    Stop being horrible.

    Sincerely,
    Me.

  34. robin Says:

Little Willow, I’m so sorry that April is batting you around! That’s not right. Look at the list above you and treat yourself sweetly right now. Have a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, watch a comfort movie, go to bed early, etc. If April won’t be nice to you, all the rest of us will.

BJ, it’s so nice to reconnect, isn’t it? Good for you for reaching out to make that happen. And congrats on the free car wash!

  35. jules Says:

I visited my mother and let her play with the girls for a bit while I took a luxurious bubble bath with a big ‘ol stack of books in hand.

  36. robin Says:

Jules, you know how to live.
