I was talking to someone the other day about the background of SEIZE THE PARALLEL (Parallelogram 3)–why I chose to write what I did, and why I loved doing it. So I thought I’d share that with you.
Have you ever had that fantasy of someone stronger, braver, more confident, more together dropping into your life and taking over? One of my favorite movies is the Warren Beatty film Heaven Can Wait. And one of my favorite scenes in that–a scene which I reference in my novel REPLAY–is where Warren Beatty’s character, the prematurely-dead football player, looks at his newly-assigned body in the mirror and thinks, “I can do something with this.” So he starts putting that body through the paces, working it out, fine-tuning it so that even that middle-aged body might still be able to play professional football.
There have been many times in my life when I’ve been in situations that felt too difficult, too scary for the “regular” me to handle. And it’s proven amazingly helpful to imagine some other version of myself–the fearless, supremely capable one–stepping up and handling the situation the way she would, as opposed to the way I would.
SEIZE THE PARALLEL contains some scenes I’ve faced in my own life: scary moments in the outdoors when I was trying to be brave and adventurous, but sometimes found myself very frightened instead. Or confrontations with people who wanted to bully and demean me, and either I stood up to them or shrank away. I have a very active imagination–as do most of you–so why not put that skill to service for ourselves? Why not imagine the best versions of ourselves–some might call it our true selves–behaving the way we wish we would in hard circumstances?
So that’s the fantasy behind SEIZE THE PARALLEL. One I had fun working out on paper every single day I wrote it. And I’m already loving how the final book in the series, BEYOND THE PARALLEL, is coming along. I’ve been working on it here and there for the past few years, and finally I get to see the whole thing take shape. I’ve had a grand scheme for this story from the very beginning, and it’s such a pleasure to see it come to life.
Speaking of which, I need to get back to work so you can all see how the series plays out. It’s a doozy–that’s all I can tell you. In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy and be inspired by the fantasy of someone stronger and braver taking over a less confident girl’s life. It’s exactly the kind of story I love to read and see at the movies, and so it was an utter joy to write.
Off to write more!
