Why I think science girls are the coolest

There’s a website out there called GirlMogul.com, and it celebrates and encourages smart girls. So you know I’m loving that.

Even more to love: This month their book club is featuring my novel FAT CAT. As part of the kickoff, I wrote an essay to the girls that you might like to read.

It reveals, among other things, why I love putting science girls in my novel. It’s envy, pure and simple.

If you know any tween girls who’d like a safe place to hang out and chat and get inspiration, send them over to GirlMogul.com! I would have loved a site like that back in the day. If, you know, they even had computers back in the day . . .

Anyway, enjoy!

Yay for science girls! Great essay. Loved FAT CAT and totally cracked up since I’m starting my family on a new way of eating today. But you really know how to make me laugh and cry. Wonderful read!

  2. robin says:

Vivian, I’m so glad you loved FAT CAT! Hurray!

And what big changes are you making there at home? Must know!

  3. Elizabeth says:

Robin, thank you so much for these inspiring words. I’m going to direct every teen girl I come in contact with to this site because girls (and boys too) NEED to see things like this. I wish we’d had it when I was that age.

And speaking of lifestyle changes based on books…I can’t become completely vegan or vegetarian for medical reasons, but I’ve challenged myself to be meatless one day per week for all of 2010, and I’ve discovered this deep love of fresh fruit topped with cinnamon and granola. It’s better than ice cream.

Elizabeth, that’s great that you’re going to send girls over to MogulGirl. The site is new to me, but I love their goals and values. I think tween girls can get a lot out of it.

And how cool about your meatless days! But even cooler about that fruit treat–sounds mighty good to me. Thanks for yet another great cooking (or in this case, non-cooking) idea!

  5. Vivian says:

Yum. Fresh fruit! Always a good thing.

I’ve been making vegan desserts for years since my middle child is allergic to dairy and eggs. So that’s not a problem. It’s all the meat, which I can do without, so I figured I’d try to change the way my family eats, to see if they feel healthier.

I’m making spinach and dried cranberry stuffed portobello mushrooms (so good!), home fries and a big salad. Not sure how the family will react so I’ve got a homemade pizza on standby. Wish me luck!

  6. Elizabeth says:

I’ve only tried this with apples and bananas so far, because most (okay, all) fruit is out of season here in MI and thus really spendy…can’t wait for summer when I can have fresh strawberries and other fruit. I threw in a few tablespoons of lowfat vanilla yogurt and some honey today and made it my lunch. No longer vegan, but still meatless and delicious.

Vivian and Elizabeth, you have no idea how much I love seeing these food ideas here. Vivian, I really, really want that dinner. Oh my gosh, it sounds so delish.

And Elizabeth? I just wrote a scene where one character is serving another character your dessert–fresh fruit, granola, cinnamon. So when you see it, that’s from you! Thank you!

  8. Elizabeth says:

Busted…I was just trying to Google Earth my way to Vivian’s house because I want that dinner too.

  9. robin says:

HAH! If only I’d thought of that!

  10. Patrick says:

You know, I would just kidnap her to a secret moon base to have her make it for me, well, us, I guess you guys could come along, but it didn’t work out so well last time I kidnapped someone to a secret moon base…

  11. Elizabeth says:

AHA! He can be taught!! :)

  12. robin says:

Patrick, that’s a fantastic link! Why do you have this information? And believe me, I’m contacting Anne Hathaway right now.

  13. Patrick says:

It would be weird if I had google alerts on Anne Hathaway, wouldn’t it?

So, I definitely don’t have that set up.

  14. robin says:

Good. Because that would be really, really weird.

Do you know that she got the part in “The Princess Diaries” because the director’s daughter or granddaughter or someone said she had excellent “princess hair”? And truly, she does.

  15. Patrick says:

Would you believe I am an avid FemaleFirst magazine reader?

  16. Patrick says:

Her hair is almost as perfect as mine!

  17. robin says:

Yes, I would believe that, and come on–everyone knows you have better hair than Anne’s. We all talk about it.
