This is fascinating to me — because my agent fought for my latest advance to be higher than the last one by 5% — and I guessed it was because he had more faith in the book this time? This is good, makes one conscious - again - of what an advance is about/for.

Sounds like Lassen has angry publisher syndrome. Honestly, I do not take anyone seriously who stoops to using such language to express himself. He sounded immature and defensive, unlike the author of the “whatever” post, who carefully presented his disagreement with Lassen and made a fine point. To be honest, I probably am a stupid writer, since I have NO CLUE about things like advances and agents, etc. To this, let me say that I need to finish a manuscript first and foremost (which I have yet to do…ever). THEN I’ll move on to these other significant issues. And fortunately, if I get to that point, I’ll have honest, experienced, friendly, helpful people like all of you to advise me.

Yeah, TadMack and Kelley, I think these discussions are good just because it always pays to inform ourselves on the business side of writing. The more information, the better.
