Writers: The value of conferences and other continuing education
I just finished reading the current installment of Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Freelancer’s Survival Guide. This week’s topic: Why writers–beginning, mid-career, bestselling, all of us–need continuing education and continuing contact with other people in our profession. This is about finding the holes in your knowledge, and being smart enough to fill them.
I can speak personally about this issue, having attended my share of writing conferences and workshops. The best workshops I’ve ever taken–both on the craft side and the business side of writing–have been those taught by Kris Rusch and her husband Dean Wesley Smith. You’ve seen me link to their blogs here often. I can honestly say I’ve learned more from them than I ever have from any other teachers or workshop presenters I’ve ever listened to.
So when you’re thinking about your own continuing education needs, take a look at the workshops these two have to offer. I am not a paid spokesperson, I am simply a grateful student. I can attest to the value of each and every workshop these two teach.
There’s my public service announcement for the day!
Read and enjoy.
