Writers, when should you quit your day job?
I have two favorite writing teachers in the world, Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about them is that they teach not only craft, but also the business side of writing.
(In fact, if you’re finally ready to make the move from aspiring writer to published and professional, take a look at the workshops Dean and Kris are running this year. Those workshops have changed many writers’ lives, including my own. Seriously.)
Speaking of the business side, lately Kris Rusch has been writing a series on her blog called “The Freelancer’s Guide to Survival.” The current installment is about the question a lot of beginning (or continuing) writers have: When can I quit my day job? Kris gives some very detailed, practical advice. You’ll probably want to cruise through some of her earlier posts, too, to catch yourself up.
And consider doing what Kris asks at the end of the post. It’s like supporting NPR or PBS.
You always round up such great resources! Thanks!
I always love it when people point out great links for me, so I try to do the same!
Love, love, love, the Kris & Dean show! They are fantastic. And loveable, too. ;-D It’s been years since I heard them though when they came to Albuquerque. But I bought tapes of their two day workshop and can re-listen whenever I want to! Have you ever done their 15 day Master Class? Curious to know more about it. Thanks, Robin!
Kim – GO FOR IT! I think there is only one spot left and then it will take them a couple years before they consider doing it again.
I didn’t do the Master Class, but pretty much every other class they have ever done. It is SOOOOO worth it. You must do it. I know most of the people who have been through it. It is amazing – everything about business and craft you could ever learn.
And the GAME. Robin and I have played the GAME. I won the GAME. Robin is winning in real-life.
Yeah, Kimberley, I think the Master Class would be INCREDIBLE.
And everybody, did you see that Patrick actually said something nice to me just there? Didja see it? Didja?
Apparently I don’t say how awesome Robin is in public often enough.
I’ll work on that!
Okay, now that’s too gushy. I can’t take it. As you were.
Hey has everyone met my friend Robin?
She’s, you know, Ok. Well, better than average I suppose. I mean, I like her. She’s cool in her way, if you know what I mean. If you don’t know, well, I guess I mean she’s not totally uncool. Right?
Ah, much better.
And I’m just giving her a head start in real-life.
