Oh, Robin, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful piece. I hope that many people read it and take it to heart. Being a public servant, I have often thought that there was some big meeting at which they deleted the words “please” and “thank you” from the dictionary. And whoever “they” are, I don’t like “them” very much. Because “they” are probably the same people who approved the customer who slapped me hard enough to bruise me over the price of cheese back when I was a cashier, too. Personally, I prefer people who don’t listen to “them.”
I’m not saying treat your librarian like a goddess (although that would be nice) but simple appreciation goes a long, long way.
And I’m saying DO treat your librarian like a goddess! Why not?
It is shocking how people–writers and otherwise–deal with people in the service industry. Maybe you have to have been a waiter/waitress, a cashier, a clerk, or anything like that to really appreciate others in that position.
But we can all practice our manners, can’t we?
And treat our librarians like the treasures they are.
Not opposed to the goddess-treatment in any form, but even simple courtesy would be FANTASTIC.
